Judging the dentist

How to Judge a Cosmetic Dentist in Dubai Before You Book

Medically reviewed by Dr. Kinan Bonni, Dentist · DHA Professional Unique ID 00180966 · October 2026

A clinic can be well equipped and still not be right for your smile, because the decisions that shape the result are the dentist's. This is how to judge the person, not the brand.

Quick answer

Best cosmetic dentist in Dubai: how can I judge one myself?

Judge the dentist on evidence, not on titles. In Dubai "cosmetic dentist" describes a dentist's focus; it is not a DHA licence grade. Check the licence on Sheryan, then look at four things: a portfolio of their own cases shown as a full sequence, whether they offer the least invasive option that reaches your goal, how specifically they answer your questions, and whether their smile design process lets you approve the result before anything irreversible.

Titles

Is "cosmetic dentist" a specialty in Dubai?

No. The Dubai Health Authority licenses dentists in categories such as general dentist, specialist and consultant, and recognises dental specialties such as orthodontics, prosthodontics and periodontics. Cosmetic dentistry is not one of them. "Cosmetic dentist" describes the work a dentist concentrates on, in the same way "family dentist" does.

That is normal, and it is not a weakness: much veneer and smile design work is done by dentists licensed as general dentists or dentists. It only becomes a problem when a title suggests a licence grade the dentist does not hold. At Creative Arts, Dr. Duaa Emran's title is Cosmetic Dentist and her focus is veneers and smile design; only our two orthodontists are described as specialists. Each dentist's DHA details are on their profile, and our guide to checking a DHA licence shows how to confirm them on Sheryan.

Matching the problem

Which kind of dentist treats which cosmetic problem?

A good cosmetic dentist knows when a problem belongs to someone else, or to a simpler treatment. Use this to check that the plan matches what bothers you.

What bothers youWho usually treats itMost conservative option to ask about
Colour onlyA general or cosmetic dentistTeeth whitening, in-clinic or at home
Small chips, small gaps, uneven edgesA cosmetic dentistComposite bonding or tooth reshaping
Crowded or rotated teethA specialist orthodontistAligners or braces, sometimes followed by fewer veneers
Gummy smile or uneven gum lineA dentist with a gum and laser focusGum contouring, after gum health is checked

At Creative Arts: veneers and smile design with Dr. Duaa Emran, Dr. Kinan Bonni, Dr. Khalid Saeed and Dr. Somar Dahdal; orthodontics with Dr. Muhannad Kazzaz and Dr. Valeriia Kozachenko; gum and laser work with Dr. Taban Ameen.

Portfolio

How to read a cosmetic dentist's portfolio beyond the final photo

A single "after" picture shows the result on one day. These requests show how the dentist thinks.

01

Ask for the whole sequence

Before, design, mock-up, finished result and, ideally, a review months later. The steps in between show whether you would approve before preparation.

02

Ask for the least invasive case

A dentist who can show whitening, bonding or six veneers, not only full sets, chooses treatments to fit the problem.

03

Ask for a case like yours

Similar teeth, gums and goals tell you far more than the most dramatic transformation on the page.

04

Ask them to talk you through one

Why that number of teeth, which material, what was hard. Clear, specific answers are a good sign.

Conservative options

Is the cosmetic dentist offering you the conservative options?

Enamel removed for veneers does not grow back, so the first plan should be the least invasive one that reaches your goal.

Signs of conservative judgement

  • Whitening is suggested first when colour is the main concern
  • Aligners are discussed before veneers for crowded teeth
  • You are told which teeth can stay natural
  • You hear what veneers will not fix, such as gums or bite
  • You are offered a mock-up and time to think

Reasons to ask more questions

  • Veneers are the answer to every concern
  • A number of teeth is named before an examination
  • Crowns are planned on healthy, untreated front teeth
  • Gums and bite are not mentioned
  • Nobody can say which part of the plan is reversible
Smile design

What a careful smile design process looks like

The technique is explained on our digital smile design page. When judging a dentist, check that each of these happens, in this order.

  1. Records

Photographs, a short video of you talking and smiling, and a 3D scan.

    First visit
  2. Design against your face

Tooth length, width and edge line are designed around your lips and face, not a template.

  3. Mock-up in your mouth

You see, speak with and photograph the design before anything irreversible.

  4. Changes, then approval

The design is adjusted until you agree; the approved version is what the laboratory works to.

  5. Try-in before bonding

The finished work is checked in your mouth and can still be changed before it is fixed.

At the consultation

Questions that test a cosmetic dentist's judgement

Standard questions get standard answers. These ask the dentist to explain their reasoning, which is where experience shows:

  • What would you not do in my case, and why?
  • If I wanted to keep every tooth untouched, what could you still change?
  • Which part of this plan can be undone, and which cannot?
  • What will this look like in ten years, and what will need replacing first?
  • Which of your own cases is closest to mine, and what was difficult about it?
  • Will you be the dentist at every visit, including the try-in?

If the answers are vague, or every route leads to the same treatment, take your records and get a second opinion. The guide to choosing a cosmetic dentist in Dubai adds a checklist for the clinic itself, and choosing a veneers clinic covers the laboratory and written plan.

Patient questions

Frequently asked questions

Can a general dentist do veneers and smile makeovers in Dubai?

Yes. Veneers, bonding and smile design are within the scope of a licensed dentist, and much of this work is done by dentists licensed as general dentists. What matters is how regularly they do it, how they plan it and whether they show you the result before anything irreversible. A title should never suggest a licence grade the dentist does not hold.

When does cosmetic work overlap with prosthodontics?

Prosthodontics is a recognised specialty focused on restoring and replacing teeth: crowns, bridges, dentures and complex rehabilitation. "Cosmetic dentist" describes a focus on appearance and is not a licence category. The two overlap when teeth are badly worn, many are already crowned, or the bite has changed; then the plan has to restore function as well as looks.

Why would a cosmetic dentist suggest braces or aligners before veneers?

Because straightening crowded or rotated teeth first often means fewer veneers and much less enamel removed, or no veneers at all. Veneers placed on crooked teeth have to be thicker in some places and need deeper preparation in others. A dentist who suggests orthodontics first is usually protecting your teeth, not delaying your treatment.

What does the title Cosmetic Dentist mean on a Dubai clinic's website?

It tells you what the dentist concentrates on, usually veneers, smile design and whitening. It is not a separate DHA licence grade. To see the actual licence category, search the dentist's name in the DHA's Sheryan directory; at Creative Arts each dentist's DHA details are also published on their profile page.

How many of a cosmetic dentist's own cases should I look at?

Enough to see variety: different numbers of teeth, different materials, and at least one case similar to yours. A handful of well-documented cases with before, mock-up and after photos tells you more than dozens of final smiles. Ask which dentist treated each one, because a clinic gallery may include several dentists.

Should a cosmetic dentist ever turn down what I ask for?

Sometimes, yes. If what you want would need heavy preparation of healthy teeth, would not suit your bite, or would look unnatural on your face, a careful dentist will say so and suggest an alternative. Being told no, with a clear reason and another option, is a good sign of judgement.
