The journey

  1. Before

Photos and examination of the starting point.

  2. Design and mock-up

The new smile is designed on the face and tried in the mouth before any tooth is prepared.

  3. Fitting day

The work made at Creative Art Dental Lab, in the same building, is fitted and checked for bite and shade.

  4. After

    The finished smile.

Before: the situation

Only the finished smile is published for Cynthia's case, so the condition of her teeth before treatment is not shown and is not described here. The photo is a front close-up taken while she smiles.

What was wrong, and why it matters

Porcelain veneers change the part of the tooth everyone sees, so small decisions show: a front tooth a little too long, edges that run flat where the lip curves, or a shade that does not suit the face. Without a plan made in advance, these are discovered only after the veneers are made.

Digital design moves those decisions to the start. The smile is planned on photographs of the patient's own face, so length, width, edge curve and shade are set against the lips and the face rather than chosen tooth by tooth, and the plan can then be tried in the mouth before anything is made.

The solution

Cynthia's porcelain veneers were digitally designed at Creative Arts. The photo shows the upper teeth in a bright, even white, with the two central incisors slightly longer than the teeth beside them and the edges stepping back gently towards the corners. The biting edges follow the curve of the lower lip.

How a case like this is planned at Creative Arts

  1. Examination of the teeth and gums, with photographs of the face and smile

  2. Digital smile design to plan each veneer's length, width, edge curve and shade

  3. A mock-up over the patient's own teeth to preview and adjust the proposed smile

  4. A written, itemised plan with the treatment and its cost, given after examination

  5. Porcelain veneers made at Creative Art Dental Lab, in the same building, from the approved design

  6. Fit, bite and shade checked at the fitting appointment

After: the result

The finished smile is even and symmetrical, with a soft curve along the edges that follows the line of Cynthia's lower lip.

Questions about this kind of case

Should every veneer in a smile be the same size?

No. Natural smiles have an order: the two central teeth are the widest and usually the longest, the teeth beside them are smaller, and the canines turn the corner of the arch. Veneers that repeat one size across the smile tend to look flat and artificial. In digital smile design at Creative Arts in Dubai each tooth's width and length is set in proportion to its neighbours and to your face, then checked on a mock-up.

How are veneer edges shaped to follow the curve of the lower lip?

In the design stage the edges of the upper front teeth are drawn along the curve the lower lip makes when you smile, usually with the central teeth slightly longer and the edges stepping back towards the corners. The curve is then checked on the mock-up while you smile and speak, and adjusted before the dental lab in the same building makes the veneers at Creative Arts.
