After whitening
For a day or two, skip karak tea, coffee, saffron and turmeric dishes, tomato sauces and red wine. Our after-whitening diet lists the pale options.

Veneers, whitening and cleaning leave most of a holiday untouched; surgery does not. How to space appointments, and what to avoid after each treatment: sun, swimming, food, alcohol and desert trips.

Yes. With veneers, crowns, whitening or a cleaning, most of a holiday is unaffected: the lab days between visits are free days. After an extraction, an implant, a bone graft or a sinus lift, the first days are for rest: avoid swimming, alcohol, strenuous activity, long spells in the heat and desert trips until your surgeon says otherwise. Creative Arts plans surgery early in the stay.

Typical advice for the days after treatment. After surgery, your surgeon tells you when each one is fine again.
| Holiday plan | After veneers or crowns | After whitening | After an extraction, implant or graft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun and heat | No restriction | No restriction; protect your lips | Avoid long spells in the heat for the first few days; heat and exertion can increase swelling |
| Swimming in the sea or a pool | Fine | Fine | Avoid for at least the first few days, longer after a graft or sinus lift |
| Snorkelling and diving | Fine once the bite feels normal | Fine | Not until cleared: the mouthpiece presses on the gum, and pressure matters after a sinus lift |
| Alcohol | Fine once numbness has gone | Avoid red wine and dark drinks for a day or two | Avoid at first, and while taking medicines that must not be mixed with alcohol |
| Desert trips and dune driving | Fine | Fine | Postpone for the first days: jolting, dust and heat, and far from help |
| Gym, running, long walks | Fine | Fine | Rest for the first days; see exercise after dental surgery |
| Smoking and shisha | Stains edges over time | Stains freshly whitened teeth | Avoid: suction and smoke slow healing; see smoking after an extraction |
After oral or IV sedation, rest for the remainder of the day with an adult and make no other plans. Typical advice, not a substitute for your own aftercare sheet.

Put the treatment that needs healing at the start and the free days in the middle. Your dentist confirms the order after examination.
Day one: examination, X-rays where needed, a scan and often a cleaning. Any surprise, such as decay under an old filling, is found before the holiday plans are fixed.
Start of the stayImplant surgery or extractions go early so the surgeon can check you before you leave. Veneer or crown preparation goes early so the lab days fit in.
Early in the stayWhile the ceramic is being made, typically over 3–5 working days, you are free. With temporary veneers, avoid biting hard or sticky food.
Lab daysKeep the fitting day free of plans that involve hard food or a late night; your lips and cheeks may be numb for a few hours.
FittingA review after you have eaten with the new teeth, then a day in hand before the flight home.
End of the stayEating out is part of a Dubai holiday. Here is what to watch after each treatment.
For a day or two, skip karak tea, coffee, saffron and turmeric dishes, tomato sauces and red wine. Our after-whitening diet lists the pale options.
Temporaries are held on lightly. Avoid sticky dates and toffee, and do not bite into hard bread, nuts or ice with the front teeth.
Eat normally, but cut food such as shawarma or meat on the bone rather than tearing it with the front teeth. See foods to avoid with veneers.
Soft, lukewarm food on the other side: hummus, labneh, yoghurt, soup that has cooled. No straws, and no spicy or very hot food at first. See what to eat after an extraction.
Wait until the numbness wears off before eating or drinking anything hot, so you do not bite your cheek or burn your lip.
Strong sun can trigger a cold sore in people who get them, and an active cold sore can mean postponing treatment near the lips. Use a lip balm with SPF from the first day and bring the cold sore treatment you normally use. See a cold sore before a dental appointment.

Most of a veneer, crown or whitening stay is yours. Three kinds of day are not:
If you want a whiter shade for a holiday photo, book in-clinic whitening, from AED 699, early in the stay, so any sensitivity settles before the end of the trip. Starting prices for veneers are on the veneers cost page.
If the trip ends with a wedding or event, finish the treatment several days before it, not the day before. New veneers need a review, and swelling after surgery can last a few days. The wedding smile page explains how far ahead to start.
During Ramadan, appointments can be arranged around fasting; our guide to dental treatment in Ramadan explains which procedures affect the fast. Surgery is easier to recover from when you can eat and drink normally.
For the number of days each treatment needs, see how many days in Dubai; for the journey home, see flying after dental treatment. The dental tourism page explains how a stay is planned.

Dr. Firas OsmanOral & Maxillofacial Surgeon & ImplantologistOral & maxillofacial surgery, implants, bone graftingNot straight away. The typical advice is to avoid swimming for at least the first few days after an implant or extraction, and longer after a bone graft or sinus lift, because exertion and water can disturb a fresh wound. Your surgeon tells you when it is fine. Plan beach days for after you have been checked.
Postpone it for the first days after an extraction or any oral surgery. Dune driving is jolting, the desert is hot and dusty, and you are far from help if bleeding restarts. Book the desert trip before your surgery, or after your surgeon has checked you. After a sinus lift, wait until you are cleared.
Avoid alcohol in the first days after an extraction, implant or graft, because it can increase bleeding and slow healing, and some prescribed medicines must not be mixed with it. Never drink on the day of sedation. After veneers or whitening there is no such rule, though red wine stains freshly whitened teeth.
Yes, the sun does not affect whitened teeth. Protect your lips with an SPF balm, because sunburnt lips are sore and strong sun can trigger a cold sore in people prone to them. For a day or two after whitening, avoid strongly coloured drinks such as karak, coffee and red wine.
Keep the preparation day, the fitting day and the review the day after free of demanding plans. The lab days between them, typically 3–5 working days, are free days, but with temporary veneers avoid sticky and hard food. Leave a margin day before your flight home.
Most soft and cut-up food is fine. Avoid sticky dates, toffee and chewy sweets, and do not bite into hard bread, nuts, ice or meat on the bone with the front teeth, because temporaries are held on lightly. If one comes off, keep it and message the clinic.
