Quick answer

What is the difference between Botox and dermal fillers?

They do opposite jobs. Botox (botulinum toxin) relaxes a specific muscle so lines caused by movement soften; it typically lasts three to four months. Dermal fillers, usually hyaluronic acid, restore volume and support that has been lost; they typically last six to eighteen months. At the Creative Arts aesthetic clinic in Jumeirah, Dubai, both start with a consultation and a written plan, and many plans use both.

Our approach

Why Creative Arts for Botox and fillers

Injectables are medical treatments. Four principles shape how they are planned at our aesthetic clinic.

01

Planned from anatomy and movement

Doses and placement are planned from your facial anatomy and how your muscles move, not from a fixed menu of areas.

02

Subtle is the aim

Treatment starts conservatively. Adding a little at the review is safer than reversing an overtreatment, and keeps your expression.

03

Structured follow-up

A review about two weeks after treatment checks the result once it has settled, with written aftercare in between.

04

Reversibility discussed first

Before any filler you are told which product is proposed and whether it can be dissolved. Hyaluronic acid fillers can; permanent fillers cannot.

Botox or filler: which does what?

Typical figures below are ranges, not promises; how long results last varies from person to person.

Botulinum toxin (Botox)Dermal filler (hyaluronic acid)
What it isA purified protein that temporarily blocks the nerve signal to a muscleA gel of hyaluronic acid, a substance the body also makes
What it doesRelaxes the muscle, so lines caused by its movement softenRestores volume and support in a specific tissue layer
Commonly treatedFrown lines between the brows, forehead lines, crow's feetCheek volume, nose-to-mouth folds, marionette lines, lips, chin and jawline
What it does not treatLines that are still there when your face is at restLines caused mainly by muscle movement
When you see itStarts in about 3–5 days, full effect around 2 weeksVisible straight away, settling as any swelling goes down
How long it typically lastsThree to four monthsSix to eighteen months, depending on product and area
Can it be reversed? No, it wears off over timeYes, hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme (hyaluronidase)
Common side effectsBruising or tenderness at injection points; occasionally headache or a temporary droopSwelling, bruising, tenderness; rarely a blocked blood vessel

Many plans combine the two over time. Our guide to injectables and skin treatments covers each in more depth.

Botulinum toxin

What Botox does, and what it does not

"Botox" is the name most people use for botulinum toxin injections. A very small amount is placed into a specific muscle; the nerve signal to that muscle is blocked for a while, the muscle relaxes, and the lines it creates when it contracts soften.

That is why the first question at the consultation is whether a line is dynamic or static. Lines that appear only when you frown, raise your brows or smile are dynamic, and toxin treats them well. Lines that are still there when your face is completely at rest are usually static: they come from volume loss and skin quality, not movement, and toxin will not remove them. Filler or skin treatments address those instead.

A "frozen" or surprised look comes from too much product or ignoring how the face moves. Dosing here is anatomy-led and deliberately conservative, with a review about two weeks later when any small adjustment can be made.

Dermal fillers

What dermal fillers do, and why the whole face matters

Most modern fillers are hyaluronic acid. Placed into a specific tissue layer, they restore volume and support where it has been lost: in the cheeks, which is often the real cause of a tired look, in deepened folds, and in the lips, chin and jawline.

Facial ageing is largely volume loss and descent, not just wrinkles. Chasing individual lines with filler tends to produce a distorted result; restoring support where volume was lost tends to look natural. So the assessment looks at the whole face rather than the line you point to, and lip filler is planned in conservative amounts that suit your face.

The serious, rare risk with filler is a blocked blood vessel (vascular occlusion), where filler enters or presses on a vessel; it can damage the skin and, very rarely, affect vision. This is why anatomical knowledge matters more than the product brand, and why hyaluronic acid fillers, which can be dissolved, are preferred. See how fillers fit into a wider plan on cosmetic injectables.

Honest suitability

Who Botox and fillers may suit, and who should wait

Suitability is decided at the consultation, after your medical history and medicines have been reviewed.

Often suitable

  • Lines that appear with movement, for botulinum toxin
  • Volume loss in the cheeks or deepened folds, for filler
  • You want softer lines with your natural expression kept
  • You can attend a review about two weeks after treatment
  • Any important event is at least a week away

Usually wait, or choose something else

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • An active skin infection, cold sore or inflammation in the area
  • A known allergy to an ingredient of the product proposed
  • For toxin, certain nerve or muscle conditions; you will be asked about them
  • Blood-thinning medicines, until discussed: they raise the chance of bruising
  • Expecting a dramatic change from a single session
Your visits

How Botox and filler treatment runs, from consultation to review

The number of visits depends on your plan. The order does not change.

  1. Consultation

Your face is assessed at rest and in movement. Medical history, medicines and previous injectables are reviewed, and the options and risks explained.

Cost

What sets the cost of Botox and fillers?

Published prices for injectables in Dubai vary widely because they are quoted in different ways: per area, per unit or per syringe. Your written plan itemises yours after the consultation.

  • How many areasOne area such as frown lines is a smaller plan than several areas treated together.
  • Amount of productHow much toxin a muscle needs, or how much filler restores the volume lost, differs from face to face.
  • Which productFillers differ in thickness and how long they last; the choice follows the area being treated.
  • Review and top-upWhether a small top-up at the two-week review is expected is stated in the plan.
  • Combined plansToxin and filler, or injectables with skin treatments, may be staged over several visits.

After treatment: when to call, and when to go to hospital

After filler, contact the clinic straight away (open daily, 10:00–20:00) if pain increases rather than settles, or if the skin near the injection turns pale, white, dusky or blue. Any change in your vision after filler, or difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing after any injection, needs a hospital emergency department immediately. These events are rare, but acting quickly matters.

Patient questions

Frequently asked questions

How long does Botox last?

Botulinum toxin typically lasts three to four months. It starts to work after about three to five days and reaches its full effect at around two weeks, which is when the review is usually booked. How long it lasts varies from person to person and with the muscle treated.

How long do dermal fillers and lip fillers last?

Hyaluronic acid fillers typically last six to eighteen months, depending on the product and the area treated. Areas that move a lot, such as the lips, tend to be at the shorter end. These are typical ranges, not a promise for your face.

Do Botox and filler injections hurt?

They are injections with fine needles, so you will feel them; most people describe a brief sting or pressure. Tenderness at the injection points can last a day or two. Ask at your consultation about the comfort options for the area being treated.

Can fillers be dissolved if I do not like the result?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which is an important safety feature and one reason they are preferred. Permanent fillers cannot be dissolved and carry a higher long-term risk. You are told which product is proposed before treatment.

Is there downtime after Botox or fillers?

Most people return to normal activity the same day. Minor swelling or pinpoint bruising can appear for two to three days, which is why we advise booking at least a week before an event. You receive written aftercare instructions on the day.

Who should not have Botox or dermal fillers?

Treatment is usually postponed in pregnancy and breastfeeding, with an active skin infection or cold sore in the area, or with a known allergy to the product. Some nerve and muscle conditions rule out toxin. Blood-thinning medicines need discussing first. Your medical history is reviewed at the consultation.

How much do Botox and fillers cost at Creative Arts in Dubai?

It depends on the number of areas, the amount and type of product and whether a review top-up is planned. Your written plan lists the cost of each item before you commit. Cosmetic treatment is often not covered by insurance; ask us and check with your insurer.

Who gives Botox and filler injections at Creative Arts?

Injectable treatments are physician-led and given under medical supervision at our aesthetic clinic in Jumeirah. You are told at the consultation who will treat you, and you can check any practitioner's licence on the DHA Sheryan medical directory.

Can Botox or fillers fix a gummy smile or uneven teeth?

Injectables act on muscle, skin and volume; they do not change teeth or gums. If your concern is the teeth or a high gum line, start with a dental assessment: our guide to gummy smile causes and our cosmetic dentistry page explain the options.
