Jaw Pain on One Side: What Causes It and Who Should Check It
Pain on one side of the jaw usually comes from a tooth, the jaw joint or the chewing muscles. When it starts, what makes it worse and what comes with it are the clues that separate them.
- TMJ assessment by a specialist orthodontist
- Oral surgeon for wisdom teeth and jaw lesions
- Open daily 10:00–20:00
Note when the pain started, which side, and whether chewing, yawning or cold drinks make it worse.
What causes jaw pain on one side?
Jaw pain on one side is most often caused by a problem tooth, such as an abscess or an inflamed wisdom tooth, or by the jaw joint and chewing muscles on that side (TMD), often linked to clenching or chewing on one side. Sinusitis can cause upper-jaw pain. At Creative Arts in Dubai, the teeth, bite and jaw joint are examined together, with X-rays when needed, before treatment is suggested.

What causes jaw pain on one side only?
These are the usual sources and the clues that point to each. Several can happen together.
| Cause | What it usually feels like | Other clues |
|---|---|---|
| Jaw joint or muscle strain (TMD) | Dull ache in front of the ear or in the cheek, worse with chewing or yawning | Clicking, stiffness in the morning, tender muscles, headache at the temple |
| Clenching or grinding | Tired, aching jaw on waking, often worse on the side you chew on | Worn or chipped teeth, a partner hearing grinding at night |
| Tooth abscess or inflamed nerve | Throbbing that may spread along the jaw to the ear | Sensitivity to hot or cold, a tooth tender to bite on, gum swelling |
| Inflamed wisdom tooth | Pain at the back of the jaw, stiffness opening | Swollen gum over a back tooth, bad taste, pain swallowing |
| Sinusitis | Upper-jaw and cheek pressure | Blocked nose, several upper teeth aching, worse bending down |
| After dental treatment | Stiff, sore jaw after a long appointment or an injection | Usually eases over days; see our trismus guide |
| Less common causes | Sharp electric shocks, a lump, or pain after a fall or blow | Need assessment by a doctor or surgeon; injuries go to a hospital |
Jaw pain when chewing vs at rest: what it suggests
Pain that comes with chewing and fades when the jaw rests usually involves the jaw joint, the chewing muscles or a tooth that hurts under pressure. If one particular tooth is sore when you bite or release, a cracked tooth or an infection at the root tip is more likely. If the ache is broad, sits in front of the ear and builds over a meal, the joint and muscles are the usual suspects.
Pain at rest, especially a throbbing ache that wakes you at night, points more towards an inflamed tooth nerve or an infection. A constant ache on waking that improves during the day suggests night-time clenching or grinding.
Jaw pain that starts with exertion rather than chewing, and eases when you stop, is a different pattern and is covered in the warning box below. If the pain seems to spread into the ear or head as well, see tooth pain radiating to the ear.
When one-sided jaw pain is an emergency
Call the UAE ambulance on 998 straight away for jaw pain with chest pain, pressure or tightness, breathlessness, sweating or nausea, or jaw pain that comes on with exertion: the heart can refer pain to the jaw. Go to a hospital emergency department for facial swelling with fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading towards the eye or neck, a jaw that is locked and cannot open or close, or pain after a blow to the face. For other jaw pain, the clinic is open daily, 10:00–20:00.
Can a wisdom tooth cause jaw pain on one side?
Yes, and it is one of the commonest reasons in young adults. A lower wisdom tooth that has only partly come through leaves a flap of gum where food and bacteria collect. When that gum is inflamed, pain spreads along the jaw, opening becomes stiff and swallowing can hurt. A decayed wisdom tooth, or one pressing on the tooth in front, can also ache.
Wisdom teeth are not removed just because they are present. Teeth causing repeated inflammation, decay or damage to the neighbouring tooth are, and the decision uses an X-ray, or a 3D CBCT scan when the roots are close to the nerve. Dr. Firas Osman, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon & Implantologist, assesses and removes impacted wisdom teeth at the clinic; see wisdom tooth removal.
How jaw pain on one side is assessed
Teeth, joint and muscles are checked in one visit, so you are not passed between clinics to rule things out.
History
When the pain started, what triggers it, whether it clicks or locks, grinding habits, recent dental work and general health.
Visit 1Teeth and gums
The teeth on that side are tested for decay, cracks and infection, and the gum around any wisdom tooth is checked.
Visit 1Joint, muscles and bite
Opening range, jaw movements, joint sounds and the chewing muscles are examined, along with how your teeth meet.
Visit 1Imaging if needed
Dental X-rays, and a 3D CBCT scan for wisdom teeth, the joint or any unexplained finding.
Visit 1Plan or referral
A written plan for the tooth or the joint, or a referral to a doctor when the cause is not dental.
Same visit
Treatment for one-sided jaw pain, from simple to complex
Joint and muscle pain often settles with simple measures; dental causes need the tooth treated.
| Option | When it fits | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Self-care | Mild TMD or muscle strain | Soft food, small bites, avoiding gum and wide yawns, warmth on the muscles, painkillers as directed on the label |
| Treating the tooth | Abscess, inflamed nerve or cracked tooth | Filling, root canal treatment or, if it cannot be saved, extraction |
| Night guard | Clenching or grinding | A custom-made night guard protects the teeth and joint while the habit is managed |
| TMJ assessment and exercises | Persistent clicking, locking or joint pain | Assessment by Dr. Valeriia Kozachenko and a stepwise plan, starting with reversible care |
| Wisdom tooth treatment | Inflamed or decayed wisdom tooth | Cleaning and review, or surgical removal when it keeps flaring up |
| Referral | Sinus, ear, nerve or heart causes | A GP or the relevant specialist treats the source |
Most jaw-joint problems improve without permanent changes to the teeth or bite; our TMJ treatment options guide explains why simple care comes first. For a clicking jaw, see jaw clicking.

Frequently asked questions
What causes jaw pain on one side only?
The commonest causes are a problem tooth, an inflamed wisdom tooth, and strain of the jaw joint or chewing muscles on that side, often from clenching or habitually chewing on one side. Sinusitis can cause upper-jaw pain. Less often, nerve, salivary gland or heart problems are involved, which is why new or unusual jaw pain should be examined.
Can a wisdom tooth cause jaw pain on one side?
Yes. Inflamed gum around a partly erupted lower wisdom tooth commonly causes one-sided jaw pain, stiffness opening and pain on swallowing. A decayed wisdom tooth can do the same. An X-ray shows the tooth's position, and removal is advised when it keeps causing problems, not simply because it is there.
Is jaw pain on one side when chewing a TMJ problem?
Often, but not always. A broad ache in front of the ear that builds during a meal points to the jaw joint or muscles. Sharp pain from one tooth when you bite or release points to a cracked or infected tooth. An examination of both the teeth and the joint tells them apart.
When could jaw pain on one side be heart-related?
Heart pain can spread to the jaw, usually with chest pain or tightness, breathlessness, sweating or nausea, and it may come on with exertion rather than chewing. Call 998 straight away if you have these symptoms. A dentist is not the right first stop for this pattern of jaw pain.
Can stress cause jaw pain on one side?
Stress is linked to clenching and grinding, which overload the jaw muscles and joint, and one side often hurts more, especially if you chew mainly on that side. Morning jaw ache and worn teeth are typical. A custom night guard, jaw rest and managing the habit usually help.
How long does one-sided jaw pain from TMD last?
Many episodes of jaw-joint or muscle pain settle within days to a few weeks with soft food, jaw rest and warmth. Pain that keeps returning, a jaw that locks, or pain lasting several weeks should be assessed so a stepwise plan can be made. Treatments that permanently change the teeth or bite are not a first step.
Who should I see for jaw pain on one side in Dubai, a dentist or a doctor?
A dentist is a sensible first step for jaw pain linked to chewing, teeth or clicking, because the teeth, gums and joint can be checked together. Jaw pain with chest symptoms needs emergency care, and pain with ear or sinus symptoms and normal teeth may need a GP or ENT doctor.
