Definition
A smile makeover is a treatment plan that combines several procedures, such as whitening, bonding, aligners, gum contouring, veneers, crowns or implants, chosen tooth by tooth to change how the whole smile looks.
Unlike a Hollywood smile, which usually means veneers across the visible teeth, a makeover can use the least invasive option for each problem: aligners for crowding, whitening for colour, bonding for a chip, a crown for a broken tooth. It starts with diagnosis, is designed digitally and tried as a mock-up. Cosmetic-only plans usually take weeks; plans with aligners or implants take months.
Ask the dentist to list each problem and the option chosen for it, including any cheaper or more conservative alternatives. Ask for the order of treatment and the expected timeline, especially if you have a wedding or event date. Which treatments can take the place of veneers in a smile makeover?
Depending on the problem, aligners can straighten crowded or spaced teeth, whitening can lift the colour, composite bonding can repair chips, small gaps and worn edges, and gum contouring can even the gum line. Crowns or implants are used only where teeth are damaged or missing. A makeover is defined by the planned result, not by veneers, and your plan should explain why each step is chosen.
