Whitening
Changes colour without removing tooth. In a makeover it can be the main step; in a Hollywood smile it lightens the teeth that stay natural before the ceramic shade is chosen.
One is a plan built from whatever your smile needs; the other is one specific plan that covers most visible teeth in ceramic. Knowing which you are being offered changes what you commit to.
The first visit is an examination and a written plan with alternatives. Nothing irreversible happens before you approve a mock-up.
A smile makeover is a plan that combines whichever treatments your smile needs, such as whitening, bonding, aligners, gum contouring, veneers, crowns or implants, and it may involve no ceramic at all. A Hollywood smile is one kind of makeover in which most visible teeth are covered with veneers or crowns in a single design. At Creative Arts in Dubai both start with diagnosis and a mock-up, and the examination shows which your teeth actually need.
Not quite. The two terms are often used as if they were interchangeable, and that causes confusion when comparing offers.
A smile makeover is a description of an approach, not a procedure. It means planning the whole smile together and choosing a treatment for each problem: whitening for colour, bonding for a chip, aligners for crowding, gum contouring for an uneven gum line, a crown for a broken tooth. A makeover can be entirely conservative.
A Hollywood smile is one particular outcome of that planning: most of the teeth that show when you smile, often eight to ten or more on the upper arch and sometimes the lower too, are covered in ceramic in one co-ordinated design. In the Gulf, the term is also used for full sets of crowns, which is a different commitment again; our guide on Hollywood smile crowns or veneers explains that difference.
So every Hollywood smile is a smile makeover, but most smile makeovers are not Hollywood smiles.
A general comparison. Your examination decides what your teeth need.
| Smile makeover | Hollywood smile | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A plan combining treatments chosen problem by problem | A full-smile ceramic design across most visible teeth |
| Typical techniques | Whitening, bonding, aligners or braces, gum contouring, veneers, crowns, implants | Veneers, sometimes with crowns; often gum contouring and whitening of untreated teeth |
| Teeth treated | As few as needed, from one or two to the whole smile | Usually eight to ten or more upper teeth; lower teeth when needed |
| Tooth reduction | None for whitening, bonding and aligners; some for ceramic | Some on most treated teeth, unless a no-prep design suits the case |
| Reversibility | Partly reversible, depending on the treatments chosen | Largely irreversible where enamel is prepared |
| Typical timeline | Weeks for cosmetic-only plans; months with aligners or implants | Usually several weeks once health work is complete |
| Long-term upkeep | Varies by treatment; bonding needs polishing and occasional repair | Ceramic will eventually need replacement; night guard if you grind |
| Look | Your own teeth, improved | Can be natural or bright, decided in the design |
Ranges are general. Gum treatment, decay or alignment found at examination extend any plan.
A makeover picks from the whole toolkit. A Hollywood smile relies mainly on ceramic, with supporting steps.
Changes colour without removing tooth. In a makeover it can be the main step; in a Hollywood smile it lightens the teeth that stay natural before the ceramic shade is chosen.
Adds tooth-coloured resin for chips, small gaps and short edges, with little or no drilling. It suits makeovers where tooth shape is mostly good.
Move teeth rather than covering them. Straightening first often means fewer veneers, or none, and less enamel removed on the rest.
Levels an uneven or high gum line. It is used in both approaches, because ceramic edges need a stable, even gum margin.
Ceramic for colour, shape and wear that conservative options cannot correct. In a Hollywood smile they cover most visible teeth in one design.
Reversibility is the biggest practical difference, and it is worth asking about each part of any plan.
Because a Hollywood smile covers most visible teeth in ceramic, it is largely an irreversible decision and a long-term maintenance commitment. A conservative makeover keeps more options open for the future. Our guide are veneers permanent? explains what lies under a veneer and why replacement is a lifelong cycle.
These are typical patterns, not rules. Many plans end up somewhere in between.
Plans often combine the two. A patient may straighten teeth with aligners, whiten the lower arch and then have six to eight upper veneers. Another may need two crowns and bonding on the rest. The label matters less than whether each tooth gets the least invasive treatment that achieves the agreed design.
Whichever label your plan carries, the sequence is the same: health first, then tooth position, gums, colour and finally ceramic. Gum inflammation and decay are treated before anything cosmetic. Alignment comes before veneers because straighter teeth need less preparation. Reshaped gums are allowed to settle before ceramic edges are placed against them. Natural teeth are whitened before the ceramic shade is chosen, because ceramic cannot be whitened later.
Skipping steps is how a Hollywood smile ends up bulky or a makeover ends up mismatched. Our smile makeover timeline shows how long common combinations take, and the guide to types of Hollywood smile compares materials and preparation styles if ceramic is part of your plan.
If every answer leads to ceramic on every tooth, ask what a conservative smile makeover without veneers would achieve, so you can compare. For a frank list of drawbacks of the ceramic route, read our Hollywood smile pros, cons and risks.

Often, but not always. A makeover built on whitening and bonding involves fewer laboratory-made restorations than a full ceramic Hollywood smile. A makeover that includes aligners, implants or several crowns can involve more. Your written plan lists each treatment separately, so you can compare like with like.
Yes. Many makeovers use only whitening, bonding, aligners and gum contouring, with no veneers at all. This works best when the natural tooth shape is good and the problems are colour, small chips, gaps or alignment.
A Hollywood smile usually covers the eight to ten or more upper teeth that show when you smile, sometimes with the lower teeth as well. A smile makeover treats only the teeth that need it, which can be one or two or the whole smile.
Either can look natural or artificial. A conservative makeover keeps your own teeth, so it usually looks natural by default. A Hollywood smile looks natural when shade, translucency, texture and proportions are designed for your face rather than chosen as the brightest option, which is why it is tested as a mock-up first.
Not fully. Teeth prepared for veneers or crowns will always need a restoration. If you later prefer a different look, the ceramic can be replaced with a new design, but the teeth cannot return to their original state. No-prep designs, where suitable, are the exception.
A Hollywood smile on healthy teeth usually takes several weeks from design to fitting. A smile makeover ranges from a few weeks for whitening and bonding to many months when aligners or implants are part of the plan. Gum or decay treatment beforehand adds time to either.
Probably neither in the ceramic sense. If colour is the only concern and the teeth are healthy, professional cleaning and whitening are usually tried first. Veneers are considered when discolouration does not respond to whitening or tooth shape also needs changing.
