How Long Does a Smile Makeover Take?

Anywhere from a couple of weeks to more than a year. The total depends on which treatments your plan combines, the order they must follow, and the healing time between them.

Quick answer

How long does a smile makeover take?

A smile makeover takes as long as its slowest step. Whitening with bonding can often be finished in two to four weeks; veneers usually take a few weeks from design to fitting; gum contouring adds about six to eight weeks of healing; orthodontics adds months; and implants typically need three to six months to integrate. At Creative Arts in Dubai, your written plan sets out each stage and its expected timing before treatment starts.

Why the answer ranges from weeks to more than a year

A smile makeover is not one procedure but a plan that combines several, chosen for what each tooth and the gums need. Its length is set by how long each treatment takes, the healing or settling time some need before the next step, and the order they must follow. Whitening and bonding are measured in weeks; anything involving tooth movement, gum healing or implants is measured in months.

Two factors are easy to forget. Decision time: you should be able to live with the mock-up from your digital smile design for as long as you need before approving irreversible work. And laboratory stages: ceramic is designed, made, tried in and adjusted, not rushed through in a day.

How long each part of a smile makeover takes

Typical ranges for the treatments most makeovers draw from. Your written plan gives the timing for your own case.

Laser gum contouringOne visitGum margin matures over about six to eight weeks
Clear aligners or bracesMinor alignment often several months; comprehensive treatment typically 12–24 monthsRetainers; restorations once teeth are stable
Veneers or crownsA few weeks; each ceramic stage typically takes the lab 3–5 working daysReview appointment
Dental implantPlaced in one surgical visitTypically three to six months to integrate, longer after bone grafting

Ranges are typical, not promises. Healing, the bite, grinding and how often you can attend all change the timing.

In what order do smile makeover treatments happen?

The sequence follows a simple logic, and it is the main reason a makeover cannot be compressed beyond a point:

  1. Health first. Decay, gum disease and any tooth needing root canal treatment are treated before cosmetic work, because they change what the teeth can support.
  2. Position before shape. If teeth are crowded or rotated, aligning them first usually means fewer veneers and less preparation, sometimes none.
  3. Gums before ceramic. After gum contouring, the margin is left to mature so the restorations sit at a stable gum line.
  4. Colour before restorations. Natural teeth are whitened and left to settle before bonding, veneers or crowns are matched to them.
  5. Foundations before the final smile. An implant must integrate before its crown is made, and neighbouring veneers or crowns are finished with it so the shades match.

Some steps overlap — whitening can happen while an implant heals, for example — and a good plan uses those overlaps instead of running everything one after another.

Combined plans

Common makeover sequences and how long they take

Examples of how treatments combine. Your plan may combine them differently.

01

Whitening + bonding: about 2–4 weeks

Whiten in the clinic or with trays, let the shade settle for about two weeks, then bond chipped edges or small gaps to the new colour, often in one visit.

02

Whitening + veneers: often 1–2 months

Design and mock-up, whitening of the teeth that stay natural, two weeks to settle, then preparation, laboratory stages, try-in and fitting.

03

Gum contouring + veneers: about 2–3 months

Laser gum contouring first, about six to eight weeks for the margin to mature, then veneers designed to the new gum line.

04

Aligners, then whitening and veneers: months to over a year

Alignment sets the pace — see how long braces take. Whitening and any veneers or bonding follow once the teeth are stable.

05

Makeover with an implant: often 4–8 months

The implant integrates for three to six months, longer after grafting, while other work continues; its crown and the neighbouring ceramic are finished together.

What happens during the waiting periods?

Waiting rarely means living with a gap or a half-finished smile. While veneers or crowns are in the laboratory, prepared teeth wear temporaries shaped from the approved design. While an implant integrates in a visible area, a temporary tooth usually fills the space; your dentist explains which type suits the site. During orthodontic treatment the cosmetic stages are planned for the end.

The waits are also useful. Living with a mock-up or temporaries is the most reliable test of a design — photographs, other people's reactions, how you speak — and changes are easy at that point. The settling time after whitening lets the shade be matched accurately. For each visit of the veneer stage itself, see the veneer procedure step by step.

Faster is not the same as finished

Compressing a makeover usually means skipping a step: matching shade before whitening has settled, preparing teeth before the gums have healed, or covering crowded teeth with thicker veneers instead of aligning them first. At Creative Arts, ceramic is never made in a single visit; it goes through design, laboratory and try-in stages.

Planning a makeover around a date or a trip

If you have a date — a wedding, a move, a new job — work backwards from it. Whitening and bonding fit into a few weeks; veneers need a few weeks plus time to decide on the design; orthodontics and implants need months. The wedding smile page sets out what fits into different lead times without rushing anything irreversible.

If you are visiting Dubai, the plan separates what needs you in the chair from what can happen between visits. Examination, design and mock-up, preparation, try-in and fitting need you here; much of implant healing and aligner treatment does not. The veneers for visitors page explains how stays are usually planned.

How Creative Arts sets your makeover timeline

After the examination — photographs, an intraoral scan, X-rays where needed, and a check of the bite and gums — you receive a written, itemised plan. It lists each treatment, the order, the expected visits and waiting periods, and the alternatives with their costs, before you commit. The smile makeover cost guide explains how that plan is built.

Ceramic work is made at Creative Art Dental Lab, in the same building as the clinic in Jumeirah. That does not make ceramic instant — each stage typically takes 3–5 working days — but shade checks and adjustments happen with you present rather than by courier. After fitting, a review appointment checks the bite and gums, and you receive written aftercare.

Frequently asked questions

Can a smile makeover be done in a week?

Parts of one can. Whitening and composite bonding can often be completed within a week or two, and sometimes that is all a smile needs. Ceramic veneers or crowns need design, mock-up, preparation, laboratory work and fitting, which usually takes a few weeks. Treatments that move teeth or need healing, such as aligners, gum contouring or implants, take months.

How long after teeth whitening can I get veneers in a smile makeover?

Usually about two weeks. Teeth look brighter straight after whitening because they are dehydrated, and the shade settles over the following days. Matching veneers or bonding too early can leave restorations that look too light once the natural teeth settle, so the final shade is taken once it is stable.

Do I need aligners or braces before a smile makeover?

Not always. If teeth are only slightly uneven, veneers or bonding may be enough. If they are crowded, rotated or the bite is off, aligning them first often reduces how many veneers are needed and how much enamel is removed. The extra months are a trade-off your dentist will explain using your own scans.

How long does a smile makeover with dental implants take?

Typically several months, because an implant needs about three to six months to integrate with the bone, and longer if bone grafting is needed first. Other parts of the makeover, such as whitening or gum treatment, can continue meanwhile. The implant crown and neighbouring veneers or crowns are then finished together so the shade matches.

How many visits does a smile makeover need?

It depends on the plan. Whitening with bonding may need two or three visits. A veneer-based makeover typically involves an examination and records visit, a design and mock-up stage, a preparation visit, a fitting and a review. Plans that include orthodontics, gum surgery or implants add visits over months; your written plan lists them.

Can I travel during my smile makeover?

Usually yes, between stages. Temporaries, aligners and healing periods do not normally stop you travelling, but check with your dentist before flying soon after any surgery, and carry your aligners and the clinic's contact details. If you live abroad, the plan groups the stages that need you in Dubai into fewer, longer visits.

What can slow down a smile makeover?

Most delays come from things found at the start: decay under old fillings, gum inflammation or a tooth that needs root canal treatment. Later delays usually come from slower healing, aligners not worn for enough hours, or wanting changes after the mock-up — which is the right moment to make them. Smoking can slow gum and implant healing.
