What is Bone graft?
Definition
A dental bone graft adds bone or bone-substitute material where jawbone has been lost, so an implant can be placed securely or a socket keeps its shape after extraction.
Bone shrinks after a tooth is lost, after infection or after long-term gum disease. Graft material can come from your own bone (autograft), processed donor bone (allograft), processed animal bone (xenograft) or synthetic materials, and is often covered with a membrane. At Creative Arts in Dubai, the need for a graft is judged from a CBCT scan, and the surgeon chooses the material, sometimes a mix, according to the defect, the site and your preferences.
Ask which graft material is planned and where it comes from, especially if you have religious or personal preferences about animal-derived material. Ask whether the graft and implant can be placed together or must be staged, and how this changes the timeline. Grafts are itemised in your written plan.
Questions about Bone graft
When does a bone graft need to heal before the implant goes in?
When too little bone remains to hold the implant firmly, the graft is placed first and left to heal, often for several months, before the implant is placed. When the defect is small and the implant can still be stabilised, the surgeon may place the implant and add graft around it at the same visit. The CBCT scan usually shows which approach your case needs.
