What is Abutment (implant abutment)?
Definition
An abutment is the connector that sits on a dental implant, passes through the gum and holds the crown, bridge or full-arch prosthesis in place.
A single implant tooth has three parts: the implant in the bone, the abutment through the gum, and the crown you see. The abutment is usually added at the crown stage, once the bone has bonded to the implant. Its shape guides the gum around the new tooth, and the crown is either screwed or cemented onto it, a choice the dentist makes case by case. At Creative Arts, the restoration is designed from a digital scan and made at Creative Art Dental Lab, in the same building.
Ask what the abutment and crown will be made of, whether the crown will be screw-retained or cemented, and why. Ask how the gum will be shaped around a front-tooth implant. Your written plan lists exactly what is included for your case, so check that the abutment is itemised alongside the implant and crown.
Questions about Abutment (implant abutment)
Is the abutment visible once the implant crown is fitted?
Normally no. The abutment sits under the crown and inside the gum, so once the crown is fitted you see only the tooth and the gum around it. In areas where the gum is thin, the abutment's material and colour can affect how the gum looks, which is why the dentist and lab consider it carefully for front teeth.
