What is CBCT scan?

Definition

A CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) scan is a 3D X-ray of the teeth and jaws that shows bone height, width and density, nerves, sinuses and roots in three dimensions.

A standard dental X-ray is a flat image; CBCT lets the dentist measure the bone and see structures from any angle. It is used mainly to plan implants, sinus lifts, bone grafts, wisdom-tooth surgery and complex root canal cases. Its dose is higher than a 2D dental X-ray, so at Creative Arts in Dubai CBCT is reserved for cases where 3D information changes the plan.

Ask what the scan will be used to decide and whether a 2D X-ray would answer the question instead. If you already have a recent CBCT from another clinic, bring the files. Tell the clinic first if you are or might be pregnant.

Questions about CBCT scan

Is a CBCT scan the same as a hospital CT scan?

They both build 3D images, but a dental CBCT uses a cone-shaped beam focused on the teeth and jaws, and the machine is designed for that area. It is taken with you sitting or standing and takes only a short time. The dose is higher than a normal dental X-ray, which is why it is used only when the 3D information will change the treatment plan.
