What is Dental crown?
Definition
A dental crown is a cap, usually ceramic, that covers the whole visible part of a tooth to hold it together and restore its shape, strength and bite.
Crowns are used when a tooth is cracked, heavily filled, badly worn or root-canal treated, and to restore an implant. Most are made in zirconia or E.max, designed digitally from a scan. A typical crown takes two visits, preparation and scan, then try-in and cementation, with lab time of about 3–5 working days in between. At Creative Arts in Dubai, crowns are made at Creative Art Dental Lab, in the same building; crowns are not made on the same day.
Ask why a crown is needed rather than a filling, which material is planned and why, and how the shade will be matched to your other teeth. Ask what temporary crown you will wear and how long it will be in place. Crown costs are itemised in the written plan after examination.
Questions about Dental crown
Why does a crown usually need two visits instead of one?
At the first visit the tooth is shaped, scanned and fitted with a temporary crown. The lab then designs and makes the ceramic crown, which typically takes 3–5 working days and allows hand finishing and shade work. At the second visit the crown is tried in, checked for fit, bite and colour, and cemented. Small adjustments can be made at the try-in.
