Which dental specialist do I need?
For most problems, start with a general dentist: they diagnose, treat the majority of conditions and refer to a specialist when a case needs one. The main specialties are endodontics (root canals), periodontics (gums), orthodontics (braces and aligners), oral and maxillofacial surgery, prosthodontics (crowns, bridges and full-mouth rebuilding) and paediatric dentistry. In Dubai, a dentist's DHA licence title shows whether they are licensed as a general dentist or a specialist.

Do I need a dental specialist, or will a general dentist do?
Most people searching "which dental specialist do I need" are really asking a simpler question: who should I see first? For almost every dental problem, the answer is a general dentist. A general dentist examines the whole mouth, takes the X-rays that are needed, and works out what is wrong before anyone decides who should treat it. Many conditions that have a specialty attached to them, such as a straightforward root canal or early gum disease, are routinely treated by general dentists.
The Dubai Health Authority's scope of practice describes it this way: a general dentist holds a basic dental degree and a DHA licence, a dental specialist meets the extra requirements for specialist practice, and general dentists should not practise beyond their education and training and should refer complex cases to an expert in the field. Referral is part of good general dentistry, not a sign that something went wrong.
Going straight to a specialist makes sense when you already know what you need, for example an orthodontic assessment for crooked teeth, or when your own dentist has recommended one.
Which dental specialist treats what?
A plain map from the problem you have to the field that covers it. The middle column shows when a general dentist commonly handles it.
| Your problem | Field (and specialist title) | Often handled by a general dentist when | A specialist is usually involved when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toothache, infected nerve, root canal | Endodontics (endodontist) | The tooth has straightforward canals | Curved or blocked canals, retreatment, or surgery at the root tip |
| Bleeding gums, gum recession, loose teeth | Periodontics (periodontist) | Gingivitis or mild gum disease | Moderate or severe gum disease, or gum surgery |
| Crooked teeth, gaps, bite problems | Orthodontics (orthodontist) | Rarely; some general dentists provide simple aligner cases | Most braces and aligner treatment, and all complex bites |
| Wisdom teeth, impacted teeth, jaw cysts, jaw surgery | Oral and maxillofacial surgery (oral surgeon) | Simple extractions | Impacted or nerve-close teeth, cysts, bone grafting, jaw surgery |
| Missing or badly broken teeth, worn bite | Prosthodontics (prosthodontist) | Single crowns, bridges and veneers | Full-mouth rebuilding, complex implant restorations, bite changes |
| Children's teeth | Paediatric dentistry (paediatric dentist) | Check-ups and simple care for cooperative children | Very young or anxious children, extensive decay, special needs |
| Jaw pain, clicking, TMJ | No single specialty | First examination and advice | Persistent or locking symptoms, often with an orthodontist or surgeon |
Fields and titles differ slightly between countries. Cosmetic dentistry is usually a field of interest rather than a licensed specialty title; it is practised by general dentists and prosthodontists with training in it.
Endodontist vs general dentist for a root canal?
An endodontist is a dentist with additional training in the inside of the tooth: the pulp, the canals and the tissue around the root tip. Many root canal treatments, particularly on front teeth and premolars with simple anatomy, are carried out by general dentists. A referral is more likely when the canals are curved, narrow or calcified, when a previous root canal has failed and needs retreatment, or when surgery at the root tip is being considered.
What matters most is the equipment and experience for your particular tooth. A dental operating microscope helps locate small or hidden canals, especially in upper molars. At Creative Arts, root canal treatment is carried out by Dr. Marina Antoniuk and Dr. Julia, who use a dental microscope; see microscope root canal treatment. If you are searching for a "root canal specialist", ask instead how the dentist will handle your specific tooth, and what happens if it proves more complex than expected.
When do I need an oral surgeon instead of a dentist?
General dentists remove most teeth. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon is usually involved when an extraction is surgical rather than simple: a wisdom tooth that is impacted or lies close to the nerve, a tooth broken below the gum, an impacted canine that needs exposing for braces, a cyst in the jaw, bone grafting or a sinus lift before implants, or corrective jaw surgery. Surgeons also plan treatment under sedation or general anaesthesia when it is needed.
At Creative Arts, Dr. Firas Osman, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon & Implantologist, carries out surgical extractions, grafting and implant surgery. Major operations such as corrective jaw surgery take place in a hospital setting, and he explains where any operation would happen. For more on this field, see oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Prosthodontist vs cosmetic dentist: who should rebuild my smile?
A prosthodontist specialises in replacing and restoring teeth: crowns, bridges, implant restorations, dentures and full-mouth rehabilitation, where the bite and the appearance are rebuilt together. "Cosmetic dentist" describes a focus rather than a licensed specialty, and covers veneers, bonding, whitening and smile design.
The two overlap. For a few veneers or whitening, a general dentist with cosmetic training is the usual choice. For a worn bite, several missing teeth or a plan that mixes crowns and implants, the planning matters more than the labels: ask who designs the bite, who makes the restorations, and whether you will see a mock-up first. At Creative Arts, Dr. Khalid Saeed and Dr. Kinan Bonni plan cosmetic and full-mouth cases, with restorations made by the lab in the same building; see how full mouth rehabilitation is priced.
Can a general dentist do Invisalign?
Yes. Invisalign is a product, not a specialty, and general dentists can be trained to provide it. Orthodontists are the dental specialists in tooth movement and bite development, and are best placed for complex bites, jaw-growth questions in children and teenagers, and cases where teeth must move a long way.
Before any aligner treatment, ask who diagnosed the bite, who plans the tooth movements, and who manages problems if teeth do not track. At Creative Arts, orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign, is planned by Dr. Muhannad Kazzaz and Dr. Valeriia Kozachenko, both Specialist Orthodontists. Dr. Valeriia Kozachenko also assesses jaw joint symptoms; our guide on who treats TMJ explains that field separately.
What do DHA dentist titles mean in Dubai?
Titles on a clinic website and on a DHA licence are not always the same thing. This is how to read them.
| Title you may see | What it means | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| General Dentist / Dentist | Licensed with a basic dental degree; treats a broad range of problems and refers complex cases | Search the name in the DHA Sheryan directory |
| Specialist (for example Specialist Orthodontist) | Licensed to practise a specialty after meeting specialist requirements | The specialty is shown on the licence |
| Consultant | A senior specialist grade | Shown on the licence |
| "Special interest", "focus", "expert" | A description of a dentist's work, not a licence category | Ask about training and the licence title |
The DHA's public Sheryan directory lets you search licensed professionals and facilities in Dubai. Our guide on checking a dentist's DHA licence walks through it.
Gum specialist: when is a periodontist worth it?
The American Academy of Periodontology describes a periodontist as a dentist who specialises in preventing, diagnosing and treating gum disease, with three additional years of education beyond dental school, and notes that some general dentists treat less serious cases and refer moderate or severe disease. In practice, bleeding gums and early gum disease are treated with cleaning and home-care changes by general dentists and hygiene teams. Deep pockets, bone loss, loose teeth or a need for gum surgery are the usual reasons for a specialist opinion.
At Creative Arts, Dr. Duaa Ameen and Dr. Taban Ameen provide gum care and deep cleaning. Our gum specialist guide covers this question in more depth.
Not sure who you need? At Creative Arts in Dubai, a general dentist examines you, explains the findings and, if a specialist field is involved, tells you who will treat you and why, in a written plan.
General dentistryHow to make sure you see the right dentist
- Describe the problem, not the title. "My back tooth hurts when I bite" gets you booked correctly; "I need a root canal specialist" may not.
- Bring your X-rays. Recent images help any dentist judge complexity; our guide to reading a dental X-ray explains what they show.
- Ask who will treat you. And what their licence title is.
- Ask what happens if it is more complex. A good answer names the next step.
- Check reviews sensibly. They describe experience, not qualifications; see how we suggest reading reviews.
