Implant vs Bridge Cost: Which Costs Less Upfront, and Over the Years?

A bridge is often the smaller first bill. An implant often costs less in upkeep to the teeth around it. Which works out cheaper for you depends on your neighbouring teeth, your bone and how long you plan ahead.

Quick answer

Is a bridge cheaper than an implant?

Usually at the start, yes: a bridge needs no surgery, scan or bone graft. Over many years the gap often narrows, because a bridge relies on two supporting teeth that can need root canals, repairs or a new bridge, while an implant leaves them untouched but needs maintenance. At Creative Arts in Dubai both paths are itemised on one written plan after examination, so you compare the whole of each, not a headline figure.

The short answer

Is a bridge cheaper than an implant in Dubai?

On the first quote, a bridge is usually cheaper. A standard bridge for one missing tooth has three units: two crowns on the neighbouring teeth and one replacement tooth between them. It needs no surgery, no 3D scan for the bone and no graft.

An implant quote has more lines. Besides the implant and the crown, it may include a 3D CBCT scan, a bone graft or socket preservation, a temporary tooth during healing, the abutment that connects crown to implant and, for anxious patients, sedation. Healing typically takes three to six months before the final crown.

The comparison changes over time. A bridge shares the work of a missing tooth with two others, which can wear, decay at the edges of their crowns or need a root canal, and if one of them fails the whole bridge usually has to be remade. An implant stands alone, so a problem with it does not drag in other teeth. That is why implant vs bridge cost is really a question about years, not about the first invoice. For the clinical pros and cons beyond cost, see implants vs bridges.

What is on each quote

What does each quote include, and what may be extra?

Compare like with like. These are the items that commonly appear on each path for one missing tooth.

ItemImplant pathBridge path
3D CBCT scanUsually, to measure bone and plan the implantNot usually needed
Extraction or socket graftIf the tooth is still present, and to limit bone lossExtraction if needed; grafting less often
Bone graft or sinus liftOnly if bone is insufficientNot needed
Surgery and anaesthesiaImplant placement under local anaesthetic; sedation optionalNo surgery; local anaesthetic for preparing the teeth
Work on the neighbouring teethNonePreparing two teeth for crowns; sometimes a core build-up or root canal first
Temporary toothOften for front teeth during healingA temporary bridge while the final one is made
Final restorationAbutment and crownThree-unit bridge (more units for longer gaps)
Time to finishTypically several monthsTypically a few weeks

A general list. Your written plan shows which items apply to you and what each costs.

Cost over time

Implant vs bridge cost over 15 years: what tends to add cost?

No figures here, because each mouth differs. These are the events that most often add cost to each path after it is finished.

PeriodImplant pathBridge path
First yearReview visits; occasionally a loose crown screw to tightenReview visits; occasionally sensitivity in a supporting tooth
Years 2–10Regular hygiene visits; possible crown repair; treatment of gum inflammation around the implant if it developsRegular hygiene visits; decay at a crown edge; a root canal in a supporting tooth if its nerve dies
Years 10–15 and beyondA new crown on the same implant if the crown wears or chipsOften a new bridge; if a supporting tooth is lost, the plan may change to a longer bridge or implants
If something failsUsually affects the implant aloneUsually affects the whole bridge and two teeth

Many implants and bridges last well beyond these periods with good care; this table shows where costs come from, not what will happen to you.

Your situation

Implant or bridge: which is usually better value in your situation?

The answer depends heavily on the teeth beside the gap and on your bone.

SituationUsually better valueWhy
Healthy, unfilled teeth either sideImplantA bridge would mean cutting down two healthy teeth for crowns
Neighbouring teeth already crowned or heavily filledBridgeThey may need crowns anyway, so the bridge does two jobs
Too little bone; large graft neededOften a bridgeGrafting adds cost, surgery and months; a bridge avoids it
Medical reasons against surgeryBridgeNo surgical step
Two or more adjacent teeth missingDependsTwo implants with a bridge on them, or a longer tooth-supported bridge; each has trade-offs
Front tooth, small gap, healthy neighboursImplant, or a bonded bridgeA resin-bonded bridge needs little or no drilling but is not suitable for every bite

General guidance only. The examination and X-rays decide what is suitable for your teeth.

Cost drivers

What changes the cost of an implant or a bridge?

Two quotes for the same tooth can differ widely. These are the main reasons.

  • Bone volumeEnough bone means a straightforward implant. Too little means grafting or a sinus lift, which adds cost and healing time to the implant path only.
  • Condition of the neighbouring teethHealthy teeth make a bridge costly in tooth structure. Teeth needing root canals or build-ups add items to the bridge path.
  • Position of the gapFront teeth need more work on shade, gum shape and temporaries; back teeth need strength for chewing.
  • Number of missing teethEach extra missing tooth adds a unit to a bridge, or an implant or bridge unit to the implant path.
  • Material and lab workZirconia, E.max and layered ceramics differ in cost and suitability; all are made by Creative Art Dental Lab in the same building.

When the honest answer is neither, yet

If gum disease or decay needs treating first, both paths wait until it is controlled, because neither an implant nor a bridge does well in an unhealthy mouth. For a small front gap, a resin-bonded Maryland bridge can be a more conservative option. And in some places, such as a back tooth with nothing biting against it, leaving the gap is a reasonable choice to discuss.

Comparing quotes

How should I compare implant and bridge quotes fairly?

  • Price the whole path. For the implant: scan, any graft, surgery, temporary, abutment and crown. For the bridge: any root canals or build-ups, the temporary and every unit.
  • Check the unit count. A one-tooth gap is usually three bridge units, not one.
  • Ask what happens if a supporting tooth fails, and what happens if the implant does not integrate.
  • Ask about maintenance. Both need cleaning and reviews; implants need professional maintenance around them for life.
  • Check the material for each tooth and who makes it.

A 2019 systematic review in the Journal of Dentistry estimated about 96% of implants were still in place after 10 years (about 93% in a stricter analysis), lower in patients aged 65 and over. That is a study average, not a promise, and it does not include crown repairs or maintenance costs. For per-unit bridge pricing see dental bridge cost; for implants, dental implant cost; and for an overview of every treatment, dental costs in Dubai. If you are wondering whether to replace the tooth at all, read what happens if a missing tooth is not replaced, and for a front gap, the Maryland bridge.

Patient questions

Frequently asked questions

Is a bridge cheaper than an implant once replacements are counted?

Usually at the start, because a bridge needs no surgery, 3D scan or bone graft. Over many years the difference often narrows, because the two supporting teeth can need root canals, repairs or a new bridge. Your written plan at Creative Arts itemises both paths so you can compare them fully.

What does an implant vs bridge cost over 15 years?

There is no single figure, but the pattern is predictable. Implants add cost mainly at the start and for maintenance; bridges add cost when a supporting tooth needs treatment or the bridge needs replacing. Which is cheaper depends on your neighbouring teeth, bone and gum health.

What extra costs come with a dental implant?

Depending on your case: a 3D CBCT scan, extraction or socket preservation, a bone graft or sinus lift, a temporary tooth during healing, the abutment and crown, and optional sedation. Ask for each to be listed separately so you can see what applies to you.

When is a bridge better value than an implant?

When the teeth beside the gap already need crowns, when there is too little bone and a large graft would be needed, when there are medical reasons against surgery, or when a quicker result matters. A bridge then does more than one job or avoids costly steps.

Does a bridge damage the supporting teeth?

Preparing teeth for crowns removes enamel and some dentine, and the nerve of a prepared tooth can occasionally need a root canal later. Decay can also start at crown edges if cleaning under the bridge is difficult. That is why a bridge on two healthy teeth has a hidden cost.

Can I get an implant and bridge comparison in one consultation?

Yes. At Creative Arts the examination and X-rays, with a 3D scan where needed, are used to write one plan that sets out the implant path, the bridge path and any alternatives, each itemised, before you decide.
