What is GBT (Guided Biofilm Therapy)?
Definition
Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a professional cleaning protocol in which a disclosing dye shows plaque, which is removed with warm water, air and fine powder before any remaining tartar.
The dye makes plaque visible, so cleaning is guided by what is actually on the teeth rather than done by routine. Air-polishing reaches along the gum line, between teeth and around implants, braces and crowns, and an ultrasonic scaler is used only where hardened tartar remains. At Creative Arts in Dubai, cleaning follows GBT and costs AED 1,200 per session; cleaning below the gum line is added where pockets need it.
Ask what the disclosing dye showed and where you miss plaque at home, and which brushes or interdental aids would help. Ask how often you should return based on your gum health, commonly every three to six months. Anything beyond the GBT session is written in your plan first.
Questions about GBT (Guided Biofilm Therapy)
Why is a coloured dye painted on my teeth before GBT cleaning?
The disclosing dye stains plaque so it can be seen; plaque is otherwise almost the same colour as teeth. It shows exactly where biofilm has built up, so the clinician cleans those areas thoroughly and you can see the spots your brushing misses. The colour is removed during the cleaning itself, so your teeth are not left stained.
