Dental X-Ray and CBCT Scan Cost in Dubai: What You Pay For

An X-ray is priced by what it is: a small image of two teeth, a panoramic view of both jaws, or a 3D scan. This page explains what changes the cost, and how to avoid paying for images you do not need.

  • X-rays only when they change a decision
  • 3D CBCT for implant and surgical planning
  • Written, itemised plan before treatment

Bring recent X-rays or a CBCT scan from another clinic; they may mean no new images are needed.

Quick answer

How much does a dental X-ray cost in Dubai?

Dental X-ray cost in Dubai depends mainly on the type of image. Small bitewing or periapical X-rays cost least, a panoramic (OPG) view of both jaws costs more, and a 3D CBCT scan costs most, rising with the size of the area scanned. At Creative Arts, X-rays are taken only when an image would change a diagnosis or plan, and each one appears as a line on your written, itemised plan.

What changes the dental X-ray cost in Dubai?

Most of the difference between two quotes comes from which image is taken and how many. Relative terms only, because the image you need depends on the question your dentist is trying to answer.

Published X-ray prices in Dubai vary widely, partly because some quote a single small image and others a full set. Compare the same type and number of images. Our guide to dental costs in Dubai explains how quotes are built across treatments.

Panoramic X-ray

How much is an OPG (panoramic) X-ray, and when is it worth it?

An OPG, or orthopantomogram, is a single wide image of both jaws taken while the machine rotates around your head. It shows every tooth, the roots, wisdom teeth, the jaw joints and the floor of the sinuses, which makes it a good overview. It usually costs more than one or two small X-rays because it covers far more.

It is worth paying for when the question is about the whole mouth: where the wisdom teeth sit, how teeth are erupting before orthodontic treatment, or a first visit when many teeth have problems. It is not detailed enough to find small decay between the teeth, so a panoramic view may be combined with bitewings, and a single painful tooth is usually better served by one periapical X-ray than by a panoramic view.

That is why the lowest headline price is not always the cheapest route. Our page on dental X-rays and CBCT explains what each image shows, and the guide to reading your dental X-ray helps you follow along when your dentist shows you the result.

3D imaging

When is a CBCT scan needed, and what does it add?

A CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) scan gives a three-dimensional view of bone, nerves, sinuses and roots. It costs more than a flat X-ray and uses more radiation, so it should be ordered for a specific question.

  • Size of the scanA small field covering two or three teeth costs less, and uses far less radiation, than a scan of one or both jaws.
  • What it is forImplant planning, impacted teeth, a wisdom tooth close to the nerve, or a complex root canal case. A routine check-up does not need one.
  • Planning on the scanFor implants, the scan becomes a digital plan and sometimes a printed surgical guide; see 3D-guided implant surgery.
  • A second scan laterAfter a bone graft, a further scan may be needed to confirm healing before an implant is placed.
Consultations

Are X-rays included in the consultation or check-up?

Clinics handle this differently. Some include a set of X-rays in a new-patient fee whether or not you need them; others list each image separately. Itemising is usually fairer, because you pay only for images that answer a question about your mouth.

At Creative Arts, X-rays are taken as part of an examination when they would change a decision, and your written plan shows whether the examination and any X-rays are separate lines. If you have had no new decay for years and recent images exist, you may need none. Our check-up cost page explains what a check-up covers, and the general dentistry page shows the care that usually follows.

The American Dental Association advises that X-rays are selected for each patient's needs, not taken on a fixed routine. RadiologyInfo, run by two US radiology societies, puts a typical panoramic X-ray at about three days of natural background radiation and a dental CBCT at around three weeks, which is one more reason a 3D scan should be justified.

Bring X-rays from another clinic

Recent images of good quality can often be used, which saves both cost and radiation. Digital files are better than printouts, and a CBCT is best shared as the original scan files rather than screenshots. For a new toothache, older images may not show the current problem, so a fresh periapical X-ray of that tooth may still be needed. Our guide to a second opinion in Dubai lists the records worth bringing.

Patient questions

Frequently asked questions

How much is an OPG (panoramic) X-ray in Dubai?

A panoramic X-ray usually costs more than one or two small X-rays and less than a CBCT scan, but published prices in Dubai vary widely. Before comparing, ask whether the figure is for the image alone or includes the examination. At Creative Arts a panoramic view is taken only when the question concerns the whole mouth, such as wisdom teeth or orthodontic planning.

When is a CBCT needed, and does it cost more than an OPG?

Yes, a CBCT scan generally costs more than a panoramic X-ray, and the price rises with the size of the area scanned. It is needed when 3D information changes the plan: measuring bone before an implant, locating the nerve near a wisdom tooth, finding an impacted tooth, or studying a complex root. A routine check-up does not need one.

Are X-rays included in the consultation at Creative Arts?

X-rays are taken as part of an examination when an image would change a decision. Your written plan shows whether the examination and any X-rays are separate lines, so you can see exactly what you are paying for. If you have recent images from another clinic, bring them, as they may mean no new X-rays are needed.

Can I bring X-rays from another clinic to save on dental X-ray cost?

Often, yes. Recent images of diagnostic quality can usually be used, which saves cost and radiation. Send digital files rather than photos of a screen, and share a CBCT as the original scan files. If a tooth has started hurting since the images were taken, a new small X-ray of that tooth may still be needed.

Why does dental X-ray cost in Dubai vary so much between clinics?

Prices describe different things. One clinic may quote a single bitewing, another a full set of small X-rays, another a panoramic view with the examination included. CBCT prices vary with the size of the scan. Compare the same type and number of images, and ask whether the dentist's review and a copy of the images are included.

Does insurance cover dental X-rays in Dubai?

It depends entirely on your policy. Many policies treat X-rays taken for diagnosis differently from those taken for cosmetic or implant planning. Ask your insurer what is covered before your visit, and ask the clinic for an itemised plan you can submit. Our guide to dental insurance in Dubai explains what to ask.

Can I get a copy of my dental X-ray or CBCT scan?

Your images are part of your dental record, and asking for a copy is reasonable, whether for a second opinion, treatment abroad or your own files. Ask in what format it will be provided: a CBCT is most useful as the original scan files, which another dentist can open and measure, rather than as screenshots.
