One-Visit Chairside Crowns or Lab-Made Crowns? An Honest Comparison

A chairside crown is milled in the clinic while you wait; a lab-made crown is designed and finished in a dental laboratory over several days. Both can work well. The differences are in shade, front teeth, bridges and time.

Quick answer

Are one-visit chairside crowns as good as lab-made crowns?

For a single back tooth, a well-made chairside crown and a lab-made crown can both work well; outcomes depend mostly on the material, the fit and the bite. Lab-made crowns have the edge where shade and character matter, such as front teeth, and for bridges and multiple units. Creative Arts in Dubai does not make crowns in one visit: crowns are made by the lab in the same building, typically in 3–5 working days.

Chairside crown or lab-made crown: how do they compare?

A general comparison for a single crown. Individual systems, labs and cases vary.

Chairside (one-visit) crownLab-made crown
Where it is madeIn the clinic, with a scanner and a milling unit next to the surgeryIn a dental laboratory, by ceramists
VisitsUsually one longer appointmentUsually two: preparation and scan, then fitting
Temporary crownNot neededWorn for the days between visits
Typical materialsBlocks of lithium disilicate, zirconia, composite-ceramic or glass ceramicZirconia (layered or monolithic), lithium disilicate, feldspathic porcelain and others
Colour and characterUsually a single-shade or multi-layer block, then stain and glazeStain and glaze, or ceramic layered by hand for depth and translucency
Front teethPossible, but matching a single front tooth is demandingUsually preferred, especially for a single front crown
Bridges and several unitsLimited; usually single unitsBridges, multiple units, implant work and full arches
Fit checkIn the mouth on the dayOn a model before it leaves the lab, then in the mouth

Both routes start the same way: an examination, X-rays, preparation of the tooth and a scan or impression.

How is a one-visit chairside crown made?

After the tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic, it is scanned with an intraoral scanner. The crown is designed on screen around the preparation, the neighbouring teeth and the bite, then milled from a pre-made ceramic or composite block in a milling unit in the clinic. Depending on the material, it may need a firing or sintering cycle in a small furnace. It is then stained and glazed or polished, tried in, adjusted and bonded or cemented, often within a single appointment of a few hours.

The appeal is obvious: no second injection, no temporary crown and no return visit. The trade-off is that the whole process, including finishing, happens within one appointment, and the colour comes mainly from the block and surface stains rather than layered ceramic. The quality of the result depends heavily on the clinician's design and finishing skill, as it does with any crown.

Where do lab-made crowns do better?

A dental laboratory has time and specialist ceramists, and that shows in a few situations:

  • A single front crown. Matching one front tooth to its natural neighbours is the hardest shade problem in dentistry. Layering ceramic by hand lets the ceramist build in translucent edges, internal colour and surface texture that a block and stain cannot always reproduce. Our guide to custom shade matching explains the process.
  • Several crowns, bridges and implant work. Bridges, multiple units planned together and implant restorations need model work, connector design and component checks that are routine in a lab.
  • Dark or discoloured preparations. A lab can choose a more opaque core or layer over it so the dark tooth does not show through.
  • A check on the model. Margins, contacts and the bite are checked on a model before the crown reaches your mouth.

Material choice matters whichever route is used. A 2023 review in Medicina reported five-year survival of 95–100% for lithium disilicate single crowns across the included studies, a material used both chairside and in labs. A 2015 review in Dental Materials found that zirconia crowns veneered with layered ceramic had more technical problems, chiefly chipping, which is why layering is reserved for teeth where appearance needs it.

Which suits you

When does each kind of crown make sense?

This is a general guide. Your dentist decides after examining the tooth, the bite and what you want from the result.

A chairside crown can be reasonable for

  • A single back tooth that is not highly visible
  • A straightforward preparation with good clearance
  • Someone who cannot return for a second visit
  • A patient who strongly prefers to avoid a temporary crown

A lab-made crown is usually preferable for

  • A single front crown that must match natural teeth
  • Several crowns planned together, or bridges
  • Crowns on implants, or full-arch work
  • Dark or discoloured teeth under the crown
  • Heavy grinders, where material and design need careful choice

Why are crowns at Creative Arts made in a lab?

Creative Arts does not make crowns in one visit. Our crowns are made by Creative Art Dental Lab, a separate laboratory in the same building, where they are designed digitally, milled, then stained, glazed or layered by hand and checked on a model, typically over 3–5 working days depending on complexity. Because the lab is in the building, the ceramist can see your teeth in person under the same light as your dentist, which matters most for front teeth.

In practice that means two visits. At the first, the tooth is prepared and scanned and a temporary crown is fitted; our guide to temporary crowns covers eating and cleaning with one. At the second, the crown is tried in, checked and fitted. If a contact, the bite or the stain needs a small change at try-in, the lab can often adjust it the same day, which is an adjustment, not a new crown. The full sequence is in our guide to the dental crown procedure.

If you have been offered a crown in a single visit elsewhere, that can be a reasonable option for some teeth. Ask which material will be used, how the shade will be matched and what happens if the fit or colour is not right.

Patient questions

Frequently asked questions

Does Creative Arts offer crowns in one visit?

No. Creative Arts does not make crowns in a single visit. Crowns are made by Creative Art Dental Lab, in the same building, typically over 3–5 working days depending on complexity. You wear a temporary crown in between. Small adjustments at the fitting appointment can often be made the same day.

Are chairside crowns weaker than lab-made crowns?

Not necessarily. Many chairside crowns are milled from the same families of material that labs use, such as lithium disilicate and zirconia, and a well-made crown of either kind can last well. Strength depends mainly on the material, its thickness, the fit and your bite rather than on where it was milled.

Is a chairside crown a good idea for a front tooth?

It can be done, but a single front crown that must match natural neighbours is where lab work usually has the advantage. Hand-layered ceramic can reproduce translucent edges and internal colour that a stained block may not. For front teeth, ask how the shade will be matched and whether a ceramist will see you.

How long does a lab-made crown take?

At Creative Arts the lab time is typically 3–5 working days depending on complexity, with the preparation visit before and the fitting visit after. Several front crowns, bridges and implant work take longer. Your dentist confirms the timing for your case when the plan is made.

Why do lab-made crowns need a temporary crown?

Because the prepared tooth needs protecting while the crown is being made. A temporary crown covers the exposed dentine, reduces sensitivity, keeps neighbouring and opposing teeth from moving and lets you eat and smile normally. It is cemented with a weaker cement so it can be removed easily at the fitting.

Can a crown made in one visit be used for a bridge?

Chairside systems are mainly used for single units. Bridges need connector design, a path of insertion across several teeth and checks on a model, so they are usually made in a dental laboratory. Implant crowns and multi-unit work are also usually lab-made.

Can I get a crown done quickly if I am only in Dubai for a short time?

Tell us your dates when you book. A crown at Creative Arts needs a preparation visit and a fitting visit with lab time between, typically 3–5 working days depending on complexity, and the visits can be planned around your stay where the case allows. If the timing does not work, your dentist explains the options.
