Before: the situation

The close-up shows the six lower front teeth. They are short and flat-topped, yellow-brown in colour, with darker brown rims around their flat biting edges. Chalky white deposits sit along the gum line of several teeth, thin dark lines show at the gum margin of two of them, and there are small gaps between the teeth.

What was wrong, and why it matters

Lower front teeth that are short and flat have usually lost their edges to wear, from grinding, acid erosion or a bite in which they take more load than they should. Once the outer enamel is gone, the softer, darker inner layer is exposed, which is why worn edges look yellow-brown and pick up stain quickly.

These teeth also work with the upper front teeth: they stop the upper teeth from over-closing and help guide the jaw. When they shorten, the bite can deepen and the gaps between them can widen. Deposits and dark lines along the gum line need cleaning and checking first, because restorations need healthy gum margins to sit against.

The solution

In Dr. Marina’s own caption for this case on her Instagram, the treatment is “Veneers”. The after photo shows six lower front teeth with restored length, rounded edges and smooth surfaces in one light shade, the gaps closed and the gum margins pink and tight around them.

With lower teeth, the length and shape of the new edges are a bite decision as much as an aesthetic one, because the upper front teeth close against them. Dr. Marina’s planning therefore checks how the teeth meet and how the jaw moves before the new length is set, and the gum condition is addressed so the veneers sit on healthy margins.

How a case like this is planned and carried out

  1. Examination, photographs and a digital scan of the lower front teeth

  2. Gum line cleaned and checked before restorative work

  3. Bite assessment of how the upper teeth close on the lower edges

  4. Mock-up of the new lower edge length

  5. Veneers made with the ceramist in the dental lab in the same building

  6. Bite reviewed after placement

After: the result

The six lower front teeth now have restored length, rounded edges and one even, light shade. The gaps are closed, and the gum margins look pink and healthy around the new veneers.

Questions about this kind of case

Are veneers on lower front teeth planned differently from upper veneers?

Yes. Lower incisors are small and thin, and the upper front teeth close against their edges, so the new length has to fit the bite as well as the smile. The dentist checks how the teeth meet in closing and in jaw movements before setting that length. Dr. Marina Antoniuk, a Russian-speaking dentist at Creative Arts in Dubai, assesses the bite first in these cases.

What makes lower front teeth become short, flat and yellow-brown?

Most often wear: grinding or clenching, acid erosion from diet or reflux, or a bite that overloads the lower edges. Once enamel wears through, the darker inner layer is exposed and stains easily. The cause should be identified before restoring the teeth, or the new edges will wear in the same way. Dr. Marina Antoniuk at Creative Arts in Dubai assesses this as part of planning.
