Gum Contouring Recovery: What Healing Looks Like After Laser Gum Reshaping

After laser gum contouring the gums are usually tender for a few days, look settled within one to two weeks and keep maturing for about six to eight weeks. Knowing what each stage looks like makes the normal parts less worrying.

Quick answer

How long does gum contouring recovery take?

Gum contouring recovery after laser reshaping of the gum alone is usually quick: tenderness for two to three days, a surface that looks settled within one to two weeks, and a gum line that keeps maturing for roughly six to eight weeks. Work that also reshapes bone heals more slowly. At Creative Arts in Dubai you receive written aftercare and a review visit before any veneers or crowns are designed.

What happens to the gum after laser contouring?

Gum contouring removes or reshapes a small band of gum to change where the gum line sits on the tooth. It is used for a gummy smile caused by excess gum, for uneven gum heights, and for gum that has grown over teeth; how the cause is diagnosed is covered on our gum contouring page.

Under local anaesthetic, the dental laser trims the tissue in small steps. Because the laser seals small blood vessels as it cuts, there is usually little bleeding and no stitches when only gum is reshaped. What is left is a shallow raw edge along the new gum line. Healing then follows the same biology as any graze in the mouth: a protective film forms over the surface, new lining cells grow in from the edges, and the fibres underneath slowly tighten and settle.

That is why the outside looks healed well before the gum line is truly stable. Most of the practical advice below follows from those two speeds.

Gum contouring recovery, day by day

A typical course after reshaping gum only. Your own aftercare sheet takes priority if it differs.

WhenWhat you may see and feelWhat to do
Day of treatmentNumbness for a few hours; the new gum edge looks raw or slightly dark where the laser sealed it; little or no bleedingPain relief as directed on the label before the numbness fades; cold or lukewarm soft food once feeling returns
Days 1–3Tenderness along the gum line; a whitish-yellow film over the treated edge, which is normal healing, not pusSoft, mild food; brush the other teeth normally and the treated area very gently as shown; use any prescribed rinse
Days 4–7Tenderness fading; the film thins and the edge turns pinkReturn gradually to normal brushing along the gum line with a soft brush
Weeks 1–2Surface looks healed; gums may still be slightly red or puffyNormal diet; keep plaque off the new margin
Weeks 6–8Gum line settled into its final positionReview visit; veneers or crowns are designed after this point

Is it normal for gums to look white after laser gum contouring?

Yes. A creamy white or yellowish layer over the treated edge in the first days is one of the most common worries after gum contouring, and it is usually part of normal healing. It is a soft film of protein that protects the raw surface while new tissue grows underneath, and it fades over the first week.

The difference from infection is in the pattern. A normal healing film sits flat on the edge, comes with tenderness that eases each day and does not smell. Infection is rare after laser contouring but tends to bring pain that increases after day three, swelling that spreads beyond the treated gum, a bad taste or discharge, or a fever. Those need a call to the clinic.

What can I eat after laser gum trimming?

Think soft, mild and lukewarm for the first two or three days. Good choices include yoghurt, laban, eggs, hummus, soups that are not too hot, rice, pasta, soft fish, mashed potato and bananas. Drink plenty of water.

For the first days, avoid:

  • Very hot food and drinks, which make tender gums throb.
  • Spicy, salty or acidic food, such as chilli, pickles, citrus and tomato sauces, which sting the raw edge.
  • Crunchy and sharp food, such as crisps, toast crusts, nuts and seeds, which can scratch the gum line or lodge against it.
  • Biting into food with the front teeth if the front gums were treated; cut food into small pieces instead.
  • Smoking and shisha, which slow healing and irritate the gums.

Most people are eating normally within about a week. Staining foods such as coffee and karak tea are not harmful to the gum, but if veneers or whitening are planned, the dentist may give you specific advice.

When to call the clinic, and when to get urgent help

Call the clinic if bleeding does not stop with ten minutes of gentle pressure using damp gauze, pain is getting worse after the third day, swelling spreads beyond the treated gum, or there is discharge, a bad taste or a fever. The clinic is open daily, 10:00–20:00, and is not a 24-hour service. Facial swelling with fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling spreading towards the eye or neck needs a hospital emergency department straight away.

How do you clean your teeth during gum contouring recovery?

Keeping the new gum line free of plaque is the most important thing you can do for a good result, because inflamed gum swells and changes shape. Typical advice is:

  • Brush the rest of the mouth normally from the first evening.
  • For the first few days, clean the treated teeth very gently with a soft brush, or as shown at the visit, without scrubbing the new edge.
  • Use any antiseptic rinse you were given for the time stated, and not longer.
  • From about the end of the first week, go back to brushing the gum line properly with a soft brush, angled towards the gum.
  • Restart floss or interdental brushes as advised, usually once the tenderness has gone.

Gum treatment

Will the gums grow back after contouring?

When the right procedure was chosen for the cause, the new gum line is generally stable. The gum has a natural 'biological width': a fixed amount of attachment it needs above the bone. If gum is trimmed but the bone underneath sits too close to the new edge, the tissue tends to grow back to recreate that space, often within months. That is why the bone level is checked before contouring, and why some cases need bone reshaping as well, a procedure called surgical crown lengthening, which heals more slowly. Whether that is suitable for you, and whether it is done here or by referral, is decided at an assessment; our guide to crown lengthening explains the difference.

Gum can also look as if it has grown back when it is inflamed. Plaque along the new margin, orthodontic treatment or certain medicines can make gums swell over the teeth again; see gums growing over teeth for those causes.

When can veneers be fitted after gum contouring?

When contouring is part of a smile makeover, the order and timing matter as much as the procedures.

StageTypical timingWhy
Gum contouringFirst, after the smile design is agreedThe new gum line becomes the frame the veneers are designed to
Surface healingOne to two weeksComfortable to eat and brush normally
Gum line maturingAbout six to eight weeksThe margin can still move slightly while the fibres settle
Veneer preparation and impressions or scansAfter the gum line is stable and reviewedEdges placed against a settled gum line stay hidden and healthy
Veneers fittedAfter the lab has made them, typically 3–5 working days later depending on the caseFitted to a gum line that will not shift afterwards

Patient questions

Frequently asked questions

How many days until gums look normal after contouring?

After laser reshaping of the gum alone, tenderness usually lasts two to three days and the surface looks healed within one to two weeks. The gum line keeps maturing for roughly six to eight weeks, which is why veneers or crowns are designed after that. Contouring that also reshapes bone takes longer to heal.

Does gum contouring recovery hurt?

The procedure itself is done under local anaesthetic. Afterwards most people describe tenderness rather than strong pain for two to three days, usually managed with an over-the-counter painkiller that suits their health, taken as directed on the label. Pain that increases after the third day is not typical and should be checked.

What can I eat after laser gum trimming?

For the first two or three days choose soft, mild, lukewarm food such as yoghurt, eggs, hummus, rice, pasta and soft fish. Avoid very hot drinks, spicy, salty or acidic food, crunchy snacks, nuts and seeds, and biting into food with the front teeth if those gums were treated. Most people eat normally within a week.

Is the white layer on my gums after contouring an infection?

Usually not. A creamy white or yellowish film over the treated edge in the first days is a normal healing layer that protects the surface while new tissue grows, and it fades within about a week. Signs of infection are increasing pain after day three, spreading swelling, a bad taste or discharge, or fever.

Will the gums grow back after gum contouring?

Not usually, when the right procedure was chosen. Gum tends to grow back when it was trimmed but the bone sat too close to the new edge, so the tissue recreates the space it needs. Checking the bone level beforehand prevents this. Inflamed gums can also swell over the teeth, so cleaning the new margin well matters.

When can veneers be fitted after gum contouring?

Veneers are usually prepared once the gum line has matured, roughly six to eight weeks after contouring, and after a review confirms it is stable. Fitting veneers earlier risks their edges ending up visible or under the gum if the margin moves. Your dentist confirms the timing for your case.

Can I go back to work the day after gum contouring?

Most people return to work or study the next day after laser contouring of the gum alone. Your speech is normal once the numbness wears off, and the treated edge may look slightly red or white for a few days. If a large area was treated or bone was involved, plan a little more time.
