How Long Does Invisalign Take? Typical Timelines, Case by Case

Minor corrections can take a few months; most full Invisalign cases take about a year or more. Your bite, the movements needed and how faithfully you wear the aligners decide where you fall.

Quick answer

How long does Invisalign take?

Invisalign typically takes a few months for minor crowding or relapse, about 12 to 18 months for moderate cases and 18 to 24 months or longer when the bite needs correcting. Each aligner is usually worn for one to two weeks, 20 to 22 hours a day, and many cases add a short refinement series. At Creative Arts in Dubai, a specialist orthodontist gives you an estimate for your own teeth after the scan and records.

Why is there no single answer to how long Invisalign takes?

Invisalign moves teeth through a planned series of aligners, each slightly different from the last. The number of aligners in that series is what sets the length of treatment, and it depends on three things: how far the teeth need to travel, which kinds of movement are involved, and whether the bite between the upper and lower jaws needs to change.

Teeth move at a biological pace. The bone around each root has to be removed ahead of the moving tooth and rebuilt behind it, so each aligner only asks for a very small step, typically a fraction of a millimetre. A front tooth that needs a slight turn may be finished in a handful of steps. Closing a large space, moving roots bodily or correcting a deep bite takes many more.

The appliance itself does not make teeth move faster. A 2019 systematic review in BMC Oral Health found that aligners shortened treatment time in the studies it included, while fixed braces did better for bite contacts, root control and retention. That is why the honest estimate comes after diagnosis, not before.

How long does Invisalign take for different cases?

Typical ranges only. Your own estimate comes from your scan, X-rays where indicated and the movements in your plan.

Type of caseWhat usually needs to moveTypical active treatment
Minor relapse after earlier bracesOne or two front teeth that have drifted or rotated slightlyOften a few months
Mild crowding or small gapsFront teeth aligned or spaces closed, bite already goodOften around 6 to 12 months
Moderate crowding or spacingSeveral teeth in both arches, sometimes with IPR to make roomAbout 12 to 18 months
Bite correction (overbite, overjet, crossbite, open bite)Teeth and the bite between the jaws, often with attachments and elasticsAbout 18 to 24 months, sometimes longer
Complex or combined problemsLarge spaces, significant rotations, uneven bite planesOften 24 months or more, or braces may suit better

Refinements, if needed, are added on top of these ranges. Retention starts when active treatment ends and continues long term.

What makes Invisalign take longer than planned?

The plan is a projection. Most delays come from the gap between that projection and what the teeth actually do:

  • Wear time. Aligners only work while they are in. Wearing them around 16 hours a day instead of 20 to 22 lets teeth fall behind the sequence, and the case may need a new scan and new aligners. Our guide to aligner wear time explains where the hours usually go.
  • Tracking. When an aligner no longer sits fully on a tooth, that tooth has stopped following the plan. Small gaps between aligner and tooth, especially at the tips of the front teeth, are an early sign.
  • Difficult movements. Rounded teeth such as lower premolars are harder to rotate, and moving teeth up or down takes longer than tipping them.
  • Missed reviews and lost aligners. A lost aligner usually means stepping back to the previous one while a replacement is made.
  • Dental work during treatment. A new filling or crown can change the fit, so the plan may need updating.

Age matters less than people expect. Adult teeth move well; the difference is that adults more often have gum recession, crowns or missing teeth that the plan has to work around.

What are refinements, and how much time do they add?

Towards the end of the first series, the orthodontist compares your teeth with the plan. If some teeth have lagged behind, a new scan is taken and a shorter additional series of aligners, called a refinement, finishes the detail. Many cases need at least one. It is a normal step, not a failure, and it usually adds a few weeks to a few months depending on how much is left to do.

When you compare plans in Dubai, it is worth asking whether refinements are included and how many. At Creative Arts the written plan sets out refinements and retention from the start, so the estimate you see covers the whole course rather than only the first box of aligners.

What happens during a typical Invisalign timeline?

The main stages most aligner patients go through. The length of the middle stage is what varies most.

StageWhat happensTypical timing
Assessment and recordsExamination, photographs, an intraoral 3D scan and X-rays where indicatedFirst visit
Digital planEvery movement is planned and the projected result shown with a written planBefore you commit
FittingAttachments bonded where needed, any planned IPR done, first aligners fittedOne visit
Active aligner seriesA new aligner usually every one to two weeks, with review visitsMonths, depending on the case
RefinementNew scan and a short extra series if some teeth lag behindWeeks to a few months
RetentionAttachments removed, retainers fitted: a bonded wire, a removable retainer or bothLong term

Is Invisalign faster than braces?

Sometimes, but not as a rule. For mild and moderate alignment, aligners and fixed braces often take a similar time, and some studies have found aligners slightly quicker. For large root movements, major rotations or significant bite correction, fixed braces generally give more control, and forcing such a case into aligners can lengthen it. Typical times for fixed braces are covered in our guide to how long braces take.

At Creative Arts both appliances are provided, so the choice is made by diagnosis rather than by which one a clinic happens to offer. The Invisalign vs braces comparison covers the wider decision, and our guide to what Invisalign can fix explains which problems suit aligners.

How can you keep Invisalign on schedule?

Most of what keeps a case on time happens at home, between visits:

  • Put the aligners back straight after eating. The hours lost are usually short gaps after meals and coffee that add up over a week.
  • Check the fit when you change aligners. Each new aligner should seat fully over every tooth. If one corner stays lifted after a couple of days, mention it at your review rather than moving on.
  • Keep the previous aligner. If one breaks or goes missing, the last pair holds your progress until a replacement arrives.
  • Plan around travel. Take enough aligners for the trip and your previous pair as a spare.
  • Keep gums healthy. Inflamed gums slow comfortable tooth movement; brushing before the aligners go back in matters as much as wear time.
  • Attend reviews. They are where tracking problems are caught while they are still small.

Changing aligners early does not finish treatment sooner

Skipping ahead to the next aligner before the current one has done its work asks the bone to move faster than it can remodel. Teeth stop tracking, which usually means a re-scan and extra aligners. Change aligners on the schedule your orthodontist gives you.

Does treatment end when the last aligner comes out?

Active treatment ends; retention does not. The fibres that hold each tooth in its socket tend to pull it back towards its old position, and teeth also drift slowly throughout life. Retainers are therefore fitted as soon as the aligners finish: a fine wire bonded behind the front teeth, a removable retainer, or both.

Retainers are usually worn more at first and then at night, as advised by your orthodontist, for the long term. Our guide on how long to wear a retainer explains the usual schedule, and the retainers page covers the types we make. Planning retention into the timeline from day one is what keeps the months of aligner wear worthwhile.

Frequently asked questions

How many months does Invisalign take on average?

There is no meaningful average across all cases. Minor relapse can be corrected in a few months, mild crowding often takes around 6 to 12 months, moderate cases about 12 to 18 months and bite correction 18 to 24 months or more. Your orthodontist estimates your own timeline from the 3D scan and the movements your plan needs.

Can Invisalign straighten teeth in 6 months?

For some mild cases, yes: small rotations, slight crowding or a little relapse after earlier braces. When the bite also needs to change, or teeth have further to move, six months is usually not realistic. Shortening a plan to hit a date by skipping necessary movements tends to give a result that does not hold, so the timeline follows the diagnosis.

How long is each Invisalign aligner worn?

Each aligner is usually worn for one to two weeks, for 20 to 22 hours a day, before moving to the next in the series. Your orthodontist sets the interval for your case, and it can change during treatment. Moving on before an aligner fits fully usually slows treatment rather than speeding it up.

Why is my Invisalign treatment taking longer than expected?

The most common reasons are wear time below 20 to 22 hours a day, teeth that have stopped tracking the plan, lost aligners and movements that are biologically slow, such as rotating rounded teeth. A review visit can show which teeth are behind. Often a new scan and a refinement series bring the case back on course.

Does Invisalign take longer for adults?

Not necessarily. Adult teeth move well, and many adults finish within the same ranges as teenagers. Adults are more likely to have gum recession, crowns, missing teeth or earlier orthodontic work that the plan must allow for, and these can add steps. The assessment checks gums and bone before any movement is planned.

Can Invisalign be finished before a wedding or a move abroad?

Tell the orthodontist your date at the first visit. Sometimes the plan can be arranged so the most visible changes happen first, or a limited goal can be agreed. Aligners cannot be made to move teeth faster than bone allows, and retainers are still needed afterwards, so plan the timeline before committing.

How long do I wear retainers after Invisalign?

Retention is long term. Retainers are usually worn more in the first period after treatment and then at night, following your orthodontist's instructions. Many people also have a fine wire bonded behind the front teeth. Teeth can begin to move back within months if retainers are stopped, so they are part of the plan from the start.
