How Long Does Dental Numbness Last After a Local Anaesthetic?

Most dental numbness fades within two to four hours. Lower back teeth usually stay numb longer than upper teeth, and numbness that lasts into the next day deserves a call.

Quick answer

How long does dental numbness last?

Numbness from a dental local anaesthetic usually lasts about two to four hours after you leave the chair. Upper teeth tend to wear off sooner, often within one to three hours, while a lower back tooth numbed with a nerve block can leave the lip, chin and tongue numb for three to five hours. At Creative Arts in Dubai your dentist tells you what to expect for your treatment, and numbness lasting into the next day should be checked.

How long does numbness last after each kind of dental injection?

Typical ranges for the soft tissue (lip, cheek, tongue) after the treatment ends. The tooth itself usually regains feeling sooner. The anaesthetic used, the amount and your own body all change the timing.

Where you were numbedWhat usually goes numbTypical duration
An upper tooth (injection beside the tooth)The tooth, nearby gum, part of the upper lip or cheekOften one to three hours
The roof of the mouthA patch of the palateOften one to two hours
A lower front toothThe tooth, gum and part of the lower lipOften two to three hours
A lower back tooth (nerve block)Half the lower lip and chin, the side of the tongue, and the teeth on that sideOften three to five hours
Surgery or several teethA larger area, sometimes both sidesCan be longer; a longer-acting anaesthetic is sometimes chosen for comfort after surgery

Your dentist may tell you a different time for your treatment; follow that advice.

Why does the lower jaw stay numb longer?

Upper teeth sit in fairly thin, porous bone, so the dentist can usually place the anaesthetic right beside the tooth and it soaks through to the root. Only a small area goes numb, and it wears off relatively quickly.

The bone around the lower back teeth is thicker and denser, so the anaesthetic is often placed further back, near the nerve that supplies all the lower teeth on that side before it enters the jaw. This is called a nerve block. It numbs everything that nerve supplies, which is why half of your lower lip, your chin and often the side of your tongue feel numb too, and why it takes longer to wear off.

That wider numbness feels strange: the lip may feel swollen or as if it is drooping, and you may dribble a little when drinking. In fact, the lip looks normal to everyone else and you can still move it. These sensations fade as the anaesthetic wears off.

Eating and drinking while your mouth is numb

The safest rule is to wait until feeling has returned before you eat anything you need to chew. A numb lip, cheek or tongue cannot warn you when you bite it, and people often only discover the damage when the numbness fades and a painful ulcer appears.

  • Drinks: cool or room-temperature drinks are fine if you sip carefully, perhaps with a straw on the side that is not numb. Straws are not advised after an extraction.
  • Hot drinks and soup: wait. You cannot judge the temperature with a numb lip and can scald it without noticing.
  • If you must eat because you are diabetic or it will be many hours, choose something soft such as yoghurt or laban and keep it on the side that is not numb.
  • After an extraction, follow the separate guidance on what to eat after a tooth extraction.

If you were also sedated, there are extra rules for the rest of the day, covered in after dental sedation.

Children and the numb lip

Children often chew or suck a numb lip or cheek because it feels odd, and the next day there is a swollen, white-looking sore that worries parents. Warn your child before leaving, keep an eye on them until the feeling returns, and hold off food until then. If a sore does appear, it usually heals within a week or so; call the clinic if it looks infected or your child has a fever.

Can I drive or go back to work while my mouth is numb?

Local anaesthetic on its own numbs only your mouth; it does not make you drowsy, so most people can drive and return to work straight after a filling or a simple extraction. Sedation is different and has its own rules. Expect your speech to sound a little thick for a few hours, especially if your tongue is numb, so it is worth avoiding important phone calls or presentations straight afterwards. Keep a tissue handy, because a numb lip makes it hard to tell when you are dribbling.

Can you make dental numbness wear off faster?

Not reliably at home. Suggestions such as massaging the cheek, applying warmth or exercising have little evidence behind them, and heat is not advised after an extraction because it can increase bleeding and swelling. Gentle movement such as a short walk will not hurt, but the anaesthetic is mainly carried away by your circulation at its own pace.

What you can do is plan around it. If you have an important meeting, a meal or a long drive afterwards, ask whether your treatment can be booked at a different time of day, or whether a shorter-acting approach suits the procedure. For many short treatments on upper teeth, the numbness is already short.

Normal numbness or a reason to call the dentist?

Most numbness is simply waiting to wear off. These are the patterns worth reporting.

What you noticeUsually normalCall the dentist
DurationFeeling returns within a few hours, often with tinglingNumbness still present the next day after a filling or simple treatment
Injection siteTender or bruised for a day or two; a little stiffness opening wideSwelling that grows, or pain that gets worse after the second day
After lower wisdom tooth surgeryNumbness for the expected hoursLip, chin or tongue still numb or tingling the next day
Lip or cheekFeels swollen but looks normalA sore that looks infected, with fever
Face or eyeNot affected after most dental injectionsRarely, the eyelid or face on one side feels weak for a few hours after an upper injection: report it, it usually settles

Clinic hours are 10:00 to 20:00 daily. Swelling with difficulty breathing or swallowing needs a hospital emergency department straight away.

What if numbness lasts for days after surgery?

Persistent numbness after an ordinary filling or crown is uncommon. After surgery, especially removal of a lower wisdom tooth whose roots lie close to a nerve, the nerve can be bruised or stretched, leaving the lip, chin or tongue numb or tingling for longer. Nerve-related numbness of this kind usually improves gradually over weeks to months, although occasionally it lasts longer. The NHS guide to local anaesthesia also lists continuing numbness or pins and needles among the side effects to seek advice about.

If numbness is still there the day after surgery, contact the clinic rather than waiting for it to pass, so it can be recorded and checked. Our guide to wisdom tooth nerve risk explains how 3D CBCT planning is used to reduce that risk before surgery and what follow-up involves.

Is dental local anaesthetic safe?

Local anaesthetic is one of the most commonly used medicines in dentistry, and the dose is matched to the treatment and to you. Before an injection, tell the dentist about your medical conditions, the medicines you take, any previous reaction to a dental or other local anaesthetic, and whether you are pregnant. A racing heart for a minute or two after the injection can happen because some dental anaesthetics contain a small amount of adrenaline to make them last longer; it passes quickly.

If the needle itself is what worries you, our guide for people who are afraid of dental injections explains numbing gel, slow injections and other ways to make it easier.

Patient questions

Frequently asked questions

How long does numbness last after a filling?

Usually about two to four hours. A filling on an upper tooth often wears off within one to three hours, while a lower back tooth numbed with a nerve block can leave the lip, chin and tongue numb for three to five hours. Avoid hot drinks and chewing on the numb side until feeling returns.

How long does numbness last after a tooth extraction?

Similar to other treatment, typically a few hours, though surgical extractions sometimes use a longer-acting anaesthetic to keep you comfortable as the first pain relief starts to work. If your lip, chin or tongue is still numb the day after a lower wisdom tooth extraction, contact the clinic so it can be checked.

Why is my lower lip still numb hours after the dentist?

Lower back teeth are usually numbed with a nerve block placed further back in the jaw, which also numbs half the lower lip, the chin and part of the tongue. That kind of numbness typically lasts three to five hours. If it is still present the next day, call the dentist.

Can I eat while my mouth is numb from the dentist?

It is safest to wait until feeling returns, because you can bite your lip, cheek or tongue without noticing. Cool drinks sipped carefully are fine. If you need to eat, choose something soft and keep it on the side that is not numb. Avoid hot drinks completely until the numbness has gone.

Is it normal for my tongue to be numb after a dental injection?

Yes, after treatment on a lower back tooth. The nerve block used for those teeth often numbs one side of the tongue as well, because a nearby nerve is affected by the same injection. It should wear off within a few hours, sometimes with tingling. Numbness lasting into the next day should be reported.

How do I stop my child biting their numb lip after the dentist?

Explain before you leave that their lip will feel funny and must not be chewed, keep them busy and in sight, and avoid food until the feeling returns. A rolled cotton pad held between the teeth and cheek can help some children. If a sore appears the next day, it usually heals within about a week.

When should I worry about dental numbness that has not gone away?

Call the dentist if numbness is still present the day after a filling or simple treatment, if tingling or numbness persists after wisdom tooth surgery, or if the injection site becomes increasingly swollen or painful. Most prolonged numbness improves, but it should be recorded and checked rather than left to wait.
