Coffee, tea and karak
Tannin stain builds up in the thin film on enamel, especially between the teeth and on the inner surfaces of the lower front teeth.
Warm water, air and a fine powder lift surface stain and plaque from enamel, around restorations and between teeth. It reveals your natural shade; it does not change it.
If you are planning whitening, book the clean first: it shows your true starting shade.

Air polishing removes surface stain and plaque by spraying a controlled mix of warm water, air and a fine, low-abrasion powder onto the teeth. At Creative Arts in Dubai it is part of every Guided Biofilm Therapy clean and lifts coffee, tea and tobacco stain from enamel, along the gum line and between teeth. It shows your natural tooth colour; changing that colour needs whitening.
Air polishing works on stain sitting on the tooth or in the plaque film over it.

Tobacco leaves a brown to black film, often with tartar underneath. Heavy deposits can take longer, and the tartar is removed separately.
Pigments that cling to plaque and rough areas of enamel come away with the plaque they sit in.
Some antiseptic mouthwashes leave a brown surface stain with regular use. It sits on the surface and usually polishes away.
The jet reaches around brackets and aligner attachments that a brush struggles with; see cleaning with braces.

Instead of a rotating cup and gritty paste, an air polisher sends a fine jet of warm water, air and very fine powder at the tooth surface. The jet loosens the stained film and plaque and rinses it away in one pass, including from pits, the gaps between teeth and the gum line, where a polishing cup reaches poorly.
The handpiece shown at the top of this page is the AIRFLOW air polisher in the clinic's GBT unit. It is one step in a sequence, described in full on our teeth cleaning with GBT page.
Most disappointment comes from expecting stain removal to do a whitening job.
| Type of discolouration | Air polishing? | What helps instead |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee, tea or tobacco film on the surface | Yes — its main job | Habits and regular recall visits keep it off |
| Hard tartar (calculus) | Not on its own | Ultrasonic removal of what remains; see tartar removal |
| Yellowing within the enamel, or with age | No | Teeth whitening |
| One tooth darker than the others | No | A dark tooth assessment |
| White or brown spots in the enamel | No | Assessment; bonding or other options |
| Stained edges of old fillings or bonding | Partly | Polishing, or replacing the restoration |
Air polishing removes what sits on the tooth; whitening changes the colour inside it. Our cleaning vs whitening guide explains which you need.
Here, air polishing sits inside the Guided Biofilm Therapy sequence rather than being a standalone cosmetic add-on.
Teeth, gums, fillings, crowns and any implants are examined, so cleaning starts from a current picture.
StartA dye colours the plaque so you and the dentist can see exactly where it is, including the places your brush misses.
StartStain and plaque are removed from enamel, restorations and the gum line, and from between the teeth.
Main stepA fine nozzle cleans shallow pockets around teeth and implants. Deeper pockets may need a deep cleaning.
If indicatedAn ultrasonic scaler removes hardened deposits that the air polisher cannot lift.
If indicatedThe teeth are checked again and your next visit is set by your risk, not by habit. See how often to have a clean.
EndStain removal is priced as part of the cleaning appointment. Our teeth cleaning cost guide covers the variables in detail.

Not in the bleaching sense. Air polishing removes stain and plaque from the surface, so teeth often look brighter and cleaner straight away, but the natural colour of the enamel and dentine stays the same. If your teeth are yellow underneath the stain, whitening is the treatment that changes that, ideally after a clean.
It depends on what caused the stain. Someone who drinks several cups of tea or coffee a day, or smokes, may see a film return within weeks to months; others stay clean far longer. Rinsing with water after dark drinks and keeping to your recall interval stretch the result.
Yes, that is one of the reasons it is used. The powder is fine and low-abrasion, so it cleans ceramic, composite and implant surfaces without the scratching a gritty paste or metal instrument can cause. The dentist chooses the settings and angles for each surface, and checks any restoration that looks loose or chipped.
Most people find it comfortable: it feels like a warm spray with a slightly salty or sweet taste, depending on the powder. Exposed roots or sensitive spots can feel a brief zing, and the dentist can adjust the settings. Numbing is rarely needed for stain removal, but it is available if a deeper clean is required.
Usually, yes. Tobacco film comes away well, although heavy, long-standing deposits take more time and the tartar beneath them is removed with an ultrasonic scaler. Stain that has gone into cracks or rough enamel may lighten without disappearing completely, and it returns while smoking continues.
Yes. Cleaning first removes surface stain and plaque, so the dentist can see your true starting shade and the whitening gel reaches clean enamel evenly. Sometimes the clean alone gives the brighter look people wanted, and whitening is not needed at all.
It is sensible to wait a few hours before coffee, tea, red wine or smoking, while the thin protective film on the teeth re-forms. After that, normal eating and drinking is fine. Rinsing with water after dark drinks helps the clean look last longer.
