Hollywood Smile Aftercare: How to Look After a Full Set of Veneers or Crowns

The first two weeks after a Hollywood smile are about adapting: to new tooth shapes, a slightly different bite and gums that settle around many new edges. After that, aftercare is mostly about cleaning those edges and protecting them at night.

Quick answer

How do you look after a Hollywood smile?

Avoid chewing until the anaesthetic wears off, expect some cold sensitivity and gum tenderness for days to a couple of weeks, and report any tooth that feels high when you bite. Long term, clean the edges at the gum line daily, use a non-abrasive toothpaste, wear a night guard if you grind and keep hygiene and review visits. At Creative Arts in Dubai you receive written aftercare and a review appointment after fitting.

What is normal in the first days after a Hollywood smile?

A Hollywood smile changes many teeth at once, so the adjustment is more noticeable than with a single veneer. These are common and usually settle on their own:

  • Cold sensitivity. Preparation and bonding can leave teeth reactive for days to a couple of weeks. It should ease steadily, not get worse.
  • Tender gums. The gum edge around each unit is handled during fitting and cement clean-up. Mild soreness for a few days is expected; gentle brushing helps it settle.
  • New shapes against your lips and tongue. Teeth that are slightly longer or fuller can make some sounds, especially "s" and "f", feel different for a few days. Talking and reading aloud speeds up adaptation.
  • A bite that feels unfamiliar. Some difference is normal. One tooth that hits first, or tenderness when biting on a single tooth, is not something to wait out: it needs a quick adjustment.

If you want to know what the fitting appointment itself feels like, our guide on whether veneers hurt explains the anaesthetic, preparation and bonding stages.

Timeline

Hollywood smile aftercare, stage by stage

A general timeline. Your written aftercare sheet takes priority where it differs.

  1. Until the numbness wears off

Do not chew, and take care with hot drinks. It is easy to bite your lip or cheek, or to burn yourself, without feeling it.

    First hours
  2. Settling in

Softer food on the first day, gentle brushing at the gum line, and over-the-counter pain relief if gums are sore. Note any tooth that feels high.

    Days 1–3
  3. Adapting

Sensitivity and speech changes usually fade. Start full daily cleaning between all units, including floss or interdental brushes.

    First 2 weeks
  4. Review appointment

The dentist checks the bite in movement, the gum around every edge and any excess cement, and the fit of your night guard if one was made.

    After fitting
  5. Maintenance

Hygiene visits at an interval set by your gum and grinding risk, with the edges and bite checked each time.

    Long term

What can you eat after a Hollywood smile?

Eating and drinking

Ceramic is bonded in place at the fitting visit, so there is no long list of banned foods. What matters is how you bite, not only what you eat.

Ceramic (E.max, porcelain, zirconia)Composite
First hoursNothing to chew until numbness wears offSame
First day or twoSofter foods while gums and bite settleSame
Hard foods (nuts, crusty bread, bones)Fine with back teeth; avoid biting straight into hard items with front edgesAs ceramic, with extra care because composite chips more easily
Ice, seeds, pen tops, packetsAvoid using front teeth on them at any stageAvoid
Coffee, tea, red saucesCeramic resists stain; edges and natural teeth can still stainStains more readily; rinse with water and keep polishing visits
SmokingStains the cement line and harms gumsStains composite noticeably and harms gums

If you have temporary restorations before the final smile, they are more fragile than the finished ceramic and need more care.

How should you clean veneers and crowns in a Hollywood smile?

The ceramic itself does not decay, but the tooth at the edge of every unit can. A full smile has many edges close to the gum, so cleaning has to be deliberate.

  • Brush the gum line. Use a soft manual or electric brush, angled into the junction between tooth and gum, twice a day.
  • Choose a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste. Highly abrasive whitening or charcoal pastes do nothing to ceramic colour and can dull composite and the natural teeth around it.
  • Clean between every unit daily. Floss or interdental brushes reach where the brush cannot. If units are joined, a floss threader or interdental brush is needed.
  • A water flosser is an extra, not a replacement for mechanical cleaning between teeth.

If your gums bleed when you clean, do not stop: gentle, thorough cleaning is usually what settles them. Bleeding that persists beyond a week or two should be checked, because bulky edges or early gum disease may be the cause. Our guide on veneers and gum health explains why the gum around the edges decides how a smile looks over time.

Protection

Night guards, sport and whitening after a Hollywood smile

Three situations where a little planning protects a lot of ceramic.

01

Night guard if you grind

Grinding loads every edge at once and is the main cause of chips and debonding. A custom guard is usually made after fitting, so it matches the finished teeth. See veneers and teeth grinding.

02

Sports mouthguard

For contact sports or anything with a risk of a knock to the face, a mouthguard protects the front units from impact.

Check-ups and professional cleaning with a Hollywood smile

After the first review, regular hygiene visits matter more, not less. At each visit the edges are checked for stain, plaque and early decay, the gums are assessed, and the bite is checked again, because teeth and jaws keep changing slowly.

Tell whoever cleans your teeth that you have a full set of veneers or crowns. Professional cleaning should be gentle on ceramic surfaces and margins. Guided Biofilm Therapy, which uses fine powder and warm water and keeps ultrasonic scaling for any remaining tartar, suits restored teeth well. Composite benefits from professional polishing at these visits to keep its shine. More on what a visit involves is on our teeth cleaning page.

Do not glue a loose veneer back yourself

If a unit comes off, keep it in a small container, avoid chewing on that side and call the clinic. Household glues damage both the veneer and the tooth and can make rebonding impossible.

Red flags after a Hollywood smile: when to call the clinic

Contact the clinic if you notice any of the following. The clinic is open every day, 10:00 to 20:00, by phone or WhatsApp.

  • pain that is getting worse rather than better, throbbing at night, or a lingering ache after cold
  • pain when biting on one tooth, or one tooth that clearly touches first
  • a unit that is loose, has come off or has a sharp chipped edge (see what to do if a veneer falls off)
  • gums that stay swollen or keep bleeding after the first two weeks
  • a new grey or dark line at the gum, or a rough edge that catches floss
  • difficulty with speech that is not improving after a couple of weeks

Swelling of the face with fever, or difficulty breathing or swallowing, needs a hospital emergency department straight away. For problems that develop months or years later, our guide to veneer problems explains causes and repairs, and how long a Hollywood smile lasts shows how good aftercare affects lifespan. The single-veneer version of this guide is veneers recovery and aftercare.

Patient questions

Frequently asked questions

How long does sensitivity last after a Hollywood smile?

Cold sensitivity after a Hollywood smile usually fades within days to a couple of weeks. It should ease steadily. Sensitivity that gets worse, throbs at night or lingers long after cold should be checked, as should pain when biting on a single tooth, which often means a small bite adjustment is needed.

What can I not eat after getting a Hollywood smile?

Avoid chewing until the anaesthetic wears off and keep to softer food for the first day or two. After that there are few true restrictions, but never bite ice, seeds, pens or packets with the front teeth, and bite hard foods with the back teeth. Composite stains more easily, so go easier on coffee, tea and smoking.

Which toothpaste is safe for a Hollywood smile?

A standard non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste is usually recommended. Highly abrasive whitening or charcoal toothpastes do not change the colour of ceramic and can dull composite and the natural teeth around it. Ask your dentist if you have sensitivity, as a desensitising toothpaste may help in the first weeks.

Do I need a night guard after a Hollywood smile?

If you grind or clench, yes. Grinding loads every edge in the smile at once and is the main cause of chipping and debonding. The guard is usually made after fitting so it matches the finished teeth, and its fit is checked at review and hygiene visits.

Why does my speech feel different after a Hollywood smile?

New tooth shapes change how your tongue and lips meet the teeth, which can affect sounds such as "s" and "f" for a few days. Most people adapt within a week or two by talking normally. If speech is still noticeably affected after that, the shape of the edges or the back surfaces may need review.

How often should I have my Hollywood smile checked?

After the review appointment that follows fitting, hygiene visits are usually set at an interval based on your gum health and grinding risk. Each visit should include checking the edges, the gums and the bite. Composite smiles benefit from professional polishing at these visits.

Can my gums bleed around a new Hollywood smile?

Some tenderness and light bleeding in the first days is common because the gum edge is handled during fitting. It usually settles with gentle, thorough cleaning. Bleeding that continues after a couple of weeks should be checked, as it can point to plaque, a bulky edge or excess cement.
