Hollywood Smile: Crowns or Veneers? What Each Costs Your Teeth

Many people in the Gulf picture a Hollywood smile as a full row of crowns. On healthy teeth, veneers usually reach the same look while keeping far more natural tooth. Crowns earn their place where teeth are weak.

Quick answer

Should a Hollywood smile be done with crowns or veneers?

On teeth that are largely healthy, a Hollywood smile is usually better done with veneers, because they cover only the front of the tooth and keep much more natural structure. Crowns cover the whole tooth and are justified where a tooth is root-treated, heavily filled, cracked or badly worn. At Creative Arts in Dubai, each tooth is assessed separately, and many full smiles combine both.

Veneer Hollywood smile vs crown Hollywood smile

General differences across a full smile. Your teeth decide which applies to each one.

Veneer-based smileCrown-based smile
CoverageFront surface and usually the biting edgeThe entire tooth above the gum
Tooth reductionTypically a fraction of a millimetre, mostly in enamel; sometimes noneConsiderably more, on every side and the biting surface
Effect on the nerveLower risk because preparation stays shallowHigher risk of later nerve inflammation on heavily reduced teeth
Protects a weak toothNo; it relies on a sound toothYes; it holds a weakened tooth together
Typical materialsE.max, feldspathic porcelain, compositeE.max, layered or monolithic zirconia
LookVery natural translucency; your tooth contributes to the colourNatural with good ceramics; can look opaque if overly bright
Gum lineEdge often kept at or above the gumEdge sits near or just under the gum all the way round
Future optionsCan usually be converted to a crown laterNext step is a new crown; nothing simpler is left

Reduction and risk vary with each tooth's position and condition. The design of your case sets the actual plan.

Why do so many Hollywood smiles in the Gulf use full crowns?

In everyday Gulf Arabic, "talbees" (crowning) and "Hollywood smile" are often used as if they mean the same thing, and many people have seen friends or relatives with a full row of white zirconia crowns. Crowns are also more forgiving for the person making them: they hide everything underneath, including dark teeth, old fillings and minor crowding, and the margins are less technically demanding to bond than thin veneers.

The cost of that convenience is paid by the teeth. A crown preparation removes enamel and dentine from every side. On a healthy front tooth, that is a large amount of sound structure exchanged for a cosmetic change that a veneer could often deliver. Once removed, it does not come back, and that tooth will need a crown for the rest of its life.

If you are weighing a full zirconia option specifically, our guide to a zirconia Hollywood smile covers where that material helps and where it looks flat.

Which teeth in a Hollywood smile need crowns, and which suit veneers?

The question is never "crowns or veneers for my smile" but "what does each tooth need". These are general patterns.

Veneer is usually enough

  • Healthy tooth with good enamel
  • Colour change that a veneer can mask
  • Small chips, worn edges or short teeth
  • Small gaps or slightly uneven shapes
  • Teeth set slightly back in the arch

Crown is usually justified

  • Root-treated tooth, especially a back tooth
  • Large old fillings covering much of the tooth
  • Cracks or a fractured cusp
  • Severe wear from grinding or erosion
  • Very dark tooth a veneer cannot mask predictably

How much tooth does each approach remove?

For a conventional ceramic veneer, the dentist typically removes a fraction of a millimetre from the front surface, staying in enamel wherever possible. Bonding to enamel is strong and predictable, so a conservative preparation is also the more stable one. Some teeth need little or no preparation at all, which our guide to a Hollywood smile without filing explains.

A crown needs space all the way around so the ceramic is thick enough not to fracture. That means reducing the tooth on every side and on the biting edge, often into dentine. The more a living tooth is reduced, the higher the chance that its nerve becomes inflamed, sometimes years later, and needs root canal treatment.

Multiply that across 16 to 20 teeth and the difference between the two approaches becomes very large. That is why a careful plan uses crowns only where a tooth needs full coverage for its own sake.

A crown is not the premium version of a veneer

Patients sometimes assume full crowns are stronger and therefore better. They are a different tool. On a healthy tooth, a crown removes more structure without a clinical benefit, and it closes off the simpler options for the future.

How do crowns and veneers compare in looks and over time?

With modern ceramics, both can look natural. Veneers have a slight edge in translucency because the tooth behind them contributes to the colour. Crowns can look equally lifelike in E.max or layered zirconia, but full monolithic zirconia in a very high-white shade is what gives some crowned smiles a flat, opaque look.

Over the years, the gum line matters most. A crown edge runs round the whole tooth near the gum. If the gums recede, a line can appear, and old metal-based crowns show it as grey; our page on the dark line around a crown explains why. Veneer edges are usually at or above the gum on the front, so they are less exposed to that problem.

Both typically last many years with good care, and both need hygiene visits and a night guard if you grind. For the full list of trade-offs, see the pros, cons and risks of a Hollywood smile.

Can one Hollywood smile combine crowns and veneers?

Yes, and many do. A typical mixed plan has veneers on the healthy upper front teeth, crowns on one or two root-treated or heavily filled teeth, and sometimes crowns on premolars that take heavy bite forces. Teeth that already look good may be left untouched.

The challenge is making veneers and crowns read as one smile, since they let light through differently and a darker tooth underneath changes the result. The ceramist adjusts thickness and layering to compensate. With our dental lab in the same building, the ceramist can see the prepared teeth and shade in person. For single-tooth decisions, our veneers vs zirconia crowns comparison goes into more detail.

Patient questions

Frequently asked questions

Is a Hollywood smile with crowns stronger than one with veneers?

A crown protects a weak tooth better, because it holds the whole tooth together. On a healthy tooth, a well-bonded veneer is strong enough for normal use and keeps more of your natural structure, which matters for the tooth's long-term health. Strength depends on the tooth underneath as much as on the restoration.

Can I change from veneers to crowns later in my Hollywood smile?

Usually yes. Because a veneer removes less tooth, a veneered tooth that later needs root canal treatment, or develops a crack or decay, can generally be prepared for a crown. Going the other way is not possible, since tooth removed for a crown cannot be restored.

Why did another clinic suggest crowns for my whole Hollywood smile?

Crowns can be suggested when teeth are crowded, very dark or heavily filled, or simply because they hide more and are more forgiving to make. Ask which teeth need crowns for structural reasons and which only for looks. A second opinion with X-rays and a mock-up can clarify whether veneers would do on some teeth.

Does a Hollywood smile with crowns need root canal treatment?

Not routinely. A crown is placed on a living tooth wherever possible. Heavy reduction does raise the chance that the nerve becomes inflamed, sometimes years later, and then root canal treatment may be needed. Teeth that are already root-treated usually receive crowns as part of the plan.

Do Hollywood smile crowns look less natural than veneers?

Not necessarily. E.max or layered zirconia crowns can look very natural. Veneers have a slight translucency advantage because your tooth contributes to the colour. The look depends more on shade, shape, edge translucency and healthy gums than on whether each tooth is a crown or a veneer.

How many teeth are crowned or veneered in a Hollywood smile?

It depends on how wide your smile is. Many upper smiles cover 8 to 10 teeth, and some patients include the lower teeth. The number of crowns within that depends on how many teeth are structurally weak, not on the size of the smile.

Is a Hollywood smile with veneers suitable if I have old crowns?

Yes, it can be. Existing crowns are usually replaced with new crowns designed to match the veneers on the neighbouring teeth, while healthy teeth receive veneers. The shade is planned across the whole smile so the different restorations look like one set.
