Braces and Aligner Emergencies in Dubai

Most braces problems are uncomfortable rather than dangerous, and a little orthodontic wax buys time. What is urgent, what can wait for an appointment, and what to do meanwhile.

Quick answer

What counts as an orthodontic emergency?

True orthodontic emergencies are rare: an injury to the face or mouth, spreading swelling or infection, or a piece of an appliance that may have been inhaled. A loose bracket, a poking wire or a lost aligner needs attention within days, not hours. Creative Arts in Dubai is open daily 10:00–20:00: call or send a photo by WhatsApp, cover sharp parts with orthodontic wax meanwhile, and go to a hospital emergency department if breathing is affected.

At home

How to fix a poking wire or loose bracket at home

These steps make you comfortable until the repair. They do not replace it: a loose part left for weeks can slow treatment.

  1. Wash your hands and find the cause

Use a mirror to see whether a wire end, a loose bracket or a hook is rubbing. A photo now helps the clinic later.

    First
  2. Dry the spot

Wax sticks only to a dry surface. Pat the bracket or wire dry with a tissue or cotton bud.

    Before wax
  3. Cover it with orthodontic wax

Roll a pea-sized piece between clean fingers and press it over the sharp part. Remove it to eat and brush, then apply fresh wax.

    Main fix
  4. Tuck a poking wire if you can

A thin wire or tie end can often be pushed flat with the clean end of a cotton bud. Do not cut the main wire yourself unless the clinic tells you to.

    If wax is not enough
  5. Leave a loose bracket in place

If the bracket is still on the wire, do not pull it off; cover it with wax. If it comes off completely, keep it in a small bag and bring it.

    Loose bracket
  6. Soothe the sore spot

Rinse with warm salt water a few times a day, and choose soft foods until the repair. Sores usually settle within days once the cause is removed.

Aligners and retainers

What to do about a lost aligner, broken retainer or retainer wire

Removable appliances cannot poke, but losing one lets teeth move. Speed matters more here than with most brace problems.

01

Lost or broken aligner

Usually you go back to your previous tray, or move to the next one if you were near the end of the current stage; ask first. Keep wearing aligners 20–22 hours a day (see aligner wear time), and keep old trays until Invisalign treatment ends.

02

Aligner that suddenly does not fit

A tray that will not seat after a missed day or a lost attachment needs checking. Do not force it or skip ahead; contact the clinic, and keep wearing the last tray that fits.

03

Lost or broken removable retainer

Teeth can start to move within days, especially in the first months after braces. Wear an older retainer if it still fits, and arrange a replacement made from a new scan. More on retainers.

04

Loose or broken bonded retainer

If the wire behind your front teeth is loose at one tooth, that tooth can drift while the rest stay put. Avoid biting on it, cover sharp ends with wax and book a repair; do not try to reattach it yourself.

Prevention

How to avoid most braces breakages

Most broken brackets come from what goes into the mouth, not from the braces themselves:

  • Hard and sticky foods: nuts, ice, hard sweets, toffee and biting into whole apples or corn on the cob are the usual culprits. Our guide on eating with braces lists safer swaps.
  • Habits: chewing pens, nails or the arms of glasses can loosen brackets as easily as food.
  • Sport: wear a mouthguard for contact sport and ask which type suits braces.
  • Cleaning: inflamed, swollen gums make sore spots worse; see teeth cleaning with braces.

Normal aching for a few days after braces go on or after an adjustment is expected, not an emergency; do braces hurt? explains what is typical.

If your braces were fitted at another clinic

Mention it when you contact us. The team will advise whether a visit to Creative Arts is appropriate for the problem and which records from your treating orthodontist would help. Temporary steps such as wax and tucking a wire are the same whoever fitted the braces.

Patient questions

Frequently asked questions

Is a broken bracket on my braces an emergency?

Usually not. A loose bracket is uncomfortable and should be fixed within a few days, because that tooth stops moving as planned, but it is not dangerous. Leave it on the wire, cover it with orthodontic wax if it rubs and contact the clinic during opening hours. Keep the bracket if it comes off completely.

What should I do if a braces wire is poking my cheek at night?

Dry the area and press a pea-sized piece of orthodontic wax over the wire end. If you have no wax, sugar-free chewing gum can work for a few hours. A thin tie wire can be pushed flat with a clean cotton bud. Contact the clinic when it opens; do not cut the wire yourself unless told to.

I lost my Invisalign aligner. Which tray should I wear?

Usually your previous tray, or the next one if you were close to the end of the current stage, but ask the clinic before moving ahead. Avoid leaving teeth without an aligner for long, as they can start to move back. A replacement can be ordered if needed, so keep every old tray until treatment ends.

How quickly do teeth move if my retainer breaks?

It varies, but teeth can start to shift within days, particularly in the first year after braces and when crowding or spacing was severe. Wear an older retainer if it fits and arrange a replacement promptly. If a bonded retainer wire has come loose, the tooth it no longer holds can drift while the others stay in place.

What if I swallow a bracket or piece of my braces?

A small piece that is swallowed usually passes through the digestive system, but tell your doctor or the clinic for advice. If you cough, wheeze or find breathing difficult after losing a piece, it may have been inhaled: go to a hospital emergency department straight away. Then arrange a repair of the braces.

Can I cut a poking braces wire myself?

Only if the clinic tells you it is safe for your case. Cutting the main wire in the wrong place can release the force on several teeth or leave a sharper end. Wax and tucking the end usually make you comfortable until the clinic can trim or replace the wire properly.

Can a braces emergency be seen on the same day in Dubai?

Creative Arts is open daily 10:00–20:00, and appointments depend on the day's schedule, so no fixed timing can be promised. Most braces problems are safe to manage at home with wax for a few days. Describe any pain, swelling or injury when you call so the team can advise how soon to come in.
