GBT cleaning
For plaque, tartar and gum health. A disclosing dye shows the biofilm, it is removed with air polishing, and an ultrasonic tip is used only on tartar that remains.
Most people who ask for whitening need a proper clean first. At our Jumeirah 3 clinic the two are planned together: biofilm and stain off, gums settled, then a shade change if you still want one.
Tell us whether you want a clean, whitening or both, so the right time is set aside.
Yes. Creative Arts, at 614 Jumeira St, Jumeirah 3, Dubai, provides Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) cleaning with air polishing for surface stain, plus in-clinic light-activated whitening and dentist-supervised home whitening with custom trays. Cleaning comes first: it removes the biofilm, tartar and surface stain that make teeth look darker, and some patients find that is all they needed. Whitening then changes the colour of the tooth itself.
These four are often confused. Knowing which problem you have saves a wasted appointment.
For plaque, tartar and gum health. A disclosing dye shows the biofilm, it is removed with air polishing, and an ultrasonic tip is used only on tartar that remains.
For brown or yellow film from coffee, tea, karak, shisha or some mouthwashes. It is part of the GBT visit and lifts stain sitting on the tooth; see air-polishing stain removal for what it can and cannot shift.
For a noticeable change in one appointment. The gums are protected, a stronger gel is applied and light-activated in rounds, and the shade is checked at the end. Details are on our laser teeth whitening page.
For a gradual change you control. Trays are made from a scan of your teeth and a lower-strength gel is worn for a set time each day or night; read how supervised home whitening works.

Whitening gel has to reach the enamel to work. Where plaque, stain or tartar sits on the teeth, the gel lightens unevenly and those areas stay darker — often between the teeth and along the gum line, exactly where people look first.
In the clinic's GBT unit, the AIRFLOW handpiece delivers the warm water and fine powder; the full sequence is on our GBT teeth cleaning page.
Some patients stop after step two. The plan is set after the examination.
Teeth, gums and existing restorations are checked. Decay, cracks and sensitivity are dealt with before any gel is used.
First visitBiofilm is disclosed and removed, stain is air-polished away and remaining tartar is cleared.
Same or next visitThe cleaned shade is recorded with you. If you still want lighter teeth, the dentist explains in-clinic versus home whitening.
After the cleanOne in-clinic session with the gums protected, or custom trays with instructions on wear time and sensitivity.
Once gums are healthyThe result is checked, restorations that no longer match are discussed, and your next cleaning interval is set.
Follow-upA side-by-side view of what each option involves. Your dentist confirms which suits your teeth at the examination.
| GBT clean with air polishing | In-clinic whitening | Home whitening (custom trays) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Changes tooth colour? | No — removes stain and deposits on the surface | Yes, in one session | Yes, gradually over the course |
| Visits | One | One, after a clean | Scan or impression, tray fitting, review |
| Sensitivity | Uncommon; warm water helps | Common for a day or two | Usually milder; wear time can be adjusted |
| How long it lasts | Until biofilm and stain build up again | Varies with diet, smoking and stain habits | Same; trays can be reused for touch-ups |
Whitening does not change crowns, veneers, bonding or fillings. If front restorations show, they may need replacing after whitening to match; see cleaning vs whitening explained.
There is no single interval. After the first GBT visit the dentist sets your recall by risk: many adults with healthy gums return about every six months, while people treated for gum disease, those with implants, braces or aligners, smokers and people with dry mouth are often seen every three to four months. Our guide on how often to have your teeth cleaned explains why.
Whitening fades slowly as stain returns. Regular cleaning removes that surface layer, so a well-maintained result needs fewer top-ups, and patients with home trays can usually do a short top-up course when the dentist agrees. Sensitivity is usually temporary; our whitening sensitivity guide covers how to manage it.
Because the clinic is open seven days, many patients from Jumeirah 1, 2 and 3, Umm Suqeim, Al Wasl, Al Safa and Al Manara book their clean on a weekend and the next recall before they leave. If gum treatment is needed first, see deep cleaning.

GBT hygiene, gum care and whitening are planned and supervised by these dentists.
Usually, yes. Biofilm, stain and tartar block the gel and leave patches, and inflamed gums react to whitening products. A GBT clean first also shows your true starting shade, so you can judge whether whitening is still worth doing. Some patients find the clean alone gives them the brightness they wanted.
Your dentist sets the interval after your first visit. Many adults with healthy gums return about every six months; people with gum disease, implants, braces, dry mouth or a smoking habit are often seen every three to four months. The clinic is open daily, so recalls can be booked on weekends.
In-clinic whitening gives a visible change in one appointment and suits people with an event coming up. Home whitening with custom trays is gradual, easier to control if you have sensitive teeth, and the trays can be reused for top-ups. Some patients combine both. The dentist recommends one after examining your teeth and gums.
No. Whitening gel lightens natural tooth only, so ceramic and composite keep their original shade. If front restorations show when you smile, they may look darker after whitening and could need replacing to match. Your dentist will point out which ones before you start.
Most people find it more comfortable than traditional scraping, because warm water and fine powder remove the biofilm and the ultrasonic tip is used only where tartar remains. Tell the dentist about sensitive areas; settings can be adjusted and numbing is available.
Sometimes. If your gums are healthy, an in-clinic whitening session can follow a clean closely. If they bleed or are inflamed after tartar removal, the dentist will usually wait until they settle. Mention that you want both when booking so enough time is set aside.
It varies. Coffee, tea, karak, red wine, smoking and shisha bring stain back faster. Regular cleaning, rinsing after dark drinks and occasional top-ups with home trays help it last longer. Whitening is not permanent, and no fixed duration can be promised.
