When strength comes first

Zirconia Veneers in Dubai

Zirconia is the strongest ceramic used in dentistry and hides a dark tooth well, but it is less translucent and harder to bond than E.max. Here is when it earns a place on a front tooth.

Quick answer

What are zirconia veneers?

Zirconia veneers are thin ceramic shells built on a zirconium-oxide core, usually layered with porcelain for a natural surface. Zirconia is stronger and more opaque than E.max, so a dentist may choose it to hide a very dark tooth or to cope with heavy bite forces. It is less translucent and bonds less predictably, which is why E.max and feldspathic porcelain remain more common for veneers. At Creative Arts in Dubai all three are made in our own lab.

Why zirconia

Why would a dentist choose zirconia for a veneer?

Zirconia is not the default veneer material. It is chosen for specific problems that glass-ceramics handle less well.

01

Hiding a very dark tooth

An opaque core blocks the grey or brown of a tooth darkened after an injury, a root canal or tetracycline staining, which thin glass-ceramic can let show through. First find out why the tooth is dark: see one dark tooth.

02

Heavy bite forces

Where the bite loads the front teeth hard, or glass-ceramic has cracked before, a stronger core lowers the risk of the veneer fracturing. The cause of the load still needs managing, often with a night guard.

03

Zirconia crowns next door

If neighbouring front teeth already carry layered zirconia crowns, a veneer in a similar material can make colour easier to coordinate across the smile.

The trade-offs

What do you give up with zirconia veneers?

Zirconia's strengths come with costs that matter more on a thin veneer than on a crown.

  • Translucency. Natural enamel lets light through the biting edge. A zirconia core blocks much of it, so the natural look has to be created in the porcelain on top. Beside natural teeth, that is harder to get right.
  • Bonding. A veneer stays on mainly through adhesion. E.max and feldspathic porcelain are etched with acid, creating a microscopic texture that bonds very strongly to enamel. Zirconia cannot be etched this way; it is air-abraded and treated with a special primer instead. That works well for crowns, which are also held by their shape, but is less predictable for a thin veneer.
  • Thickness. A core plus a porcelain layer needs room, so zirconia veneers usually mean more enamel reduction than E.max.
  • Chipping. The core rarely breaks, but the porcelain layered over it can chip.

More translucent zirconia types exist, but they gain translucency by giving up some strength. The trade-off narrows; it does not disappear.

Is zirconia the right veneer material for your teeth?

Worth discussing if

  • One or more front teeth are very dark and whitening has not helped
  • Glass-ceramic veneers or crowns have cracked before, and the bite has been assessed
  • Neighbouring front teeth already have layered zirconia crowns
  • You accept a little less translucency in exchange for masking or strength

Another option usually serves you better if

  • Your teeth are a normal colour and you want the most lifelike result — E-max veneers usually look more natural
  • The tooth has lost a lot of structure to fillings or a root canal — a zirconia crown usually protects it better
  • You grind with no night guard plan — chips are likely whatever the material (see veneers and teeth grinding)
  • The only problem is colour — whitening comes first
Choosing the material

How the material is decided for each veneer

Zirconia is never chosen from a price list; these checks decide it.

  1. Measure the colour underneath

The shade of the tooth beneath the veneer is recorded, not just the target shade. It tells the ceramist how much darkness has to be hidden.

    Examination
  2. Read the bite

Wear facets, chipped edges and how your teeth meet when you bite and slide show how much load each front tooth carries.

    Examination
  3. Test the design

A mock-up of the planned shape is tried in before any preparation, so the thickness each tooth needs is known.

    Design stage
  4. Choose tooth by tooth

Most teeth in a smile usually suit E.max; zirconia is kept for the teeth that need it. Your written plan states the material for each tooth and why.

Who builds the natural look into a zirconia veneer?

The zirconia core is designed digitally and milled; the natural look comes afterwards, when the ceramist layers porcelain over it for depth, colour gradient and edge effects. Creative Art Dental Lab is in the same building as the clinic, so the ceramist can see the dark tooth being masked and the natural teeth beside it under the same light as your dentist, rather than judging them from photographs.

  1. 1Consultation & records — examination, photographs and the radiographs your case needs
  2. 2Digital scan — an intraoral scan replaces impression trays for most cases
  3. 3Design — the restoration or smile is designed digitally and reviewed with you
  4. 4Lab fabrication — milled from ceramic, then hand-finished for shade and texture
  5. 5Try-in — shade, shape and fit checked in your mouth, adjusted in-house if needed
  6. 6Placement & review — bonded or cemented, bite balanced, reviewed afterwards

Patient questions

Frequently asked questions

Are zirconia veneers stronger than E.max veneers?

The zirconia core is stronger than lithium disilicate, so a zirconia veneer is less likely to crack through. But most are layered with porcelain, and that outer layer can still chip. In practice, how long any veneer lasts depends more on the bite, grinding and how well it is bonded than on the core material.

Do zirconia veneers look natural?

They can look very good, but are usually a little less lifelike than E.max or feldspathic porcelain because the core lets less light through. The ceramist compensates with layered porcelain. Zirconia tends to look most convincing next to existing zirconia crowns, and least convincing as a single veneer beside natural teeth.

Can zirconia veneers cover very dark or tetracycline-stained teeth?

Masking strong discolouration is where zirconia is most useful, because its opaque core blocks the dark colour underneath. E.max with opaque layers and a little more thickness can also mask many dark teeth. The dentist measures the colour of the tooth underneath before choosing, and checks first why a tooth has darkened.

Why are zirconia veneers less common than E.max veneers?

Mainly bonding and translucency. Veneers depend on adhesion, and etched glass-ceramics such as E.max bond to enamel more predictably than zirconia. E.max is also more translucent and can be made thinner, so it usually needs less preparation. Zirconia is kept for cases where its strength or masking is worth those trade-offs.

Do zirconia veneers need more tooth preparation?

Usually, yes. A zirconia core with porcelain on top needs more room than a thin E.max or feldspathic veneer, so more enamel is typically removed. The mock-up shows how much space the design needs before anything is prepared, and the aim is to keep the preparation within enamel wherever possible.

Zirconia veneer or zirconia crown for a root-treated front tooth?

It depends on how much tooth is left. A root-treated front tooth that is largely intact can sometimes take a veneer, and zirconia may be chosen to hide its darker colour. If large fillings have weakened it, a crown usually protects it better. An X-ray and examination decide.

Is a zirconia Hollywood Smile the same as zirconia veneers?

Not always. The phrase is often used for a full set of zirconia crowns, which removes far more tooth than veneers. At Creative Arts a Hollywood Smile is planned tooth by tooth: veneers where teeth are healthy, crowns only where a tooth needs one, and zirconia only where its strength or masking is needed.
